I've always preferred a small patch of hair and bare lips but recently I shaved everything and love how it looks and feels for about 12 hours. After that stubble comes and then the dreaded ingrowns. A bald pussy with red bumps on it is NOT my idea of sexy. I have fair skin and black, curly hair so the hair tends to get really bad ingrowns. I want to wax but I'm afraid that when the hair grows back it will be even worse and will be an ugly, bumpy mess. Any tried and true methods for ladies.with a tendency to get ingrown hair?

Waxing. Plain and simple. Ingrowns are much less, in my experience, if you wax. Plus, you are smoother for much longer and the hair grows back thinner and softer. But, I do highly recommend that you go to a professional who is specifically trained in Brazilians.

That said, if you do not want to take the waxing route, SatinDesire has a wonderful post on how to get the smoothest shave possible.

Regardless, whichever method you use, make sure you exfoliate! An exfoliating glove should do the trick, and gently rubbed the skin in small circles.

EXFOLIATE...and exfoliate more! Exfoliate immediately after you shave and then everyday in between shavings.

It will help.

I have had great success with laser treatments, but they are expensive. In addition, coconut oil after showers. It moisturizes great, has a very light scent, and guys seem to love the supple slickness when freshly applied.

I think you answered part of your own question. It sounds like you have always had a patch, but the bumps showed up after you shaved the patch. So either keep shaving regularly and take care of the razor burn or go with one of the other suggestions. Find a good product that works for you, kitten uses a different product for shaving that area, then she uses for legs, armpits, etc.

Along with exfoliation, keep the area clean. Much like when men use aftershave, you should also. I use witch hazel, it's gentle and cleans the area. Ingrown hairs happen when the pore gets clogged with dead skin and bacteria can irritate causing infection and bumps.

Going with waxing like fire_breeze suggested can help minimize ingrown hair if properly cared for. The hair will grow back thinner with each wax. Keep the area clean and exfoliated and it should be fairly smooth.

I used to have a terrible problem with ingrown hair and can honestly say this method has worked for me.

Two things.

Tend Skin is one. It burns like a motherfucker but works well. It's sort of like witches hazel but with 10000 times more fire.

The other is a sharp razor. Because I am rugged and awesome, I use a straight razor to shave. Those things are awesome and so sharp. Like, chop an arm off sharp. I find that the sharper the blade, the less ingrown hairs exist. I realize a straight razor isn't functional for vaginal smoothing, but a sharp razor is critical. Razors dull more from the effects of water than the actual hairs themselves, I've been told. If you dry your blade completely after you use it, with a blow dryer, you get much longer life. When I was using regular blades, it cost a fortune because I could only get like two uses out of them. But then I started drying them after each use and I would get at least 5 uses per blade.

BONUS!!!!

Also, there is some stuff called Pre-Shave Oil that works wonders. And invest in a decent shaving cream too. Not the shit you buy at CVS. Good stuff. And use hot water. And exfoliate, as someone mentioned.

Well, if you like burning sensitive skin I'd say go for it. Though, the witch hazel actually has some anti inflammatory properties so it will clean and sooth the skin. The redness will go away faster. :)

Could you imagine slapping some Tend Skin on your genitals?

Doesn't Cosmopolitan address this very issue? It used to, years ago. I know because I would read my sister's copies.

Or has it gone all conservative?

Just sayin'

Does witch hazel work as well as Tend Skin?

Disinfects and soothes just fine for me. I use it on my legs, too. If you get the regular drug store kind it has a tiny bit of alcohol in it, so there's a light sting and then it's fine.

Tend Skin actually made things worse for me. The burn irritated my skin further and it stayed red for a long time. >_< So unpleasant. Though, perhaps an allergic reaction? I've had similar results with other OTC creams/gels claiming to banish bumps. Typically the reason they work is that they kill bacteria, and hopefully have something to combat inflammation. Witch hazel just costs a lot less and doesn't have any lingering scent.

I'm like the dad in My Big Fat Greek Wedding. He went around peddling Windex as a cure all. :D

I'd say use what works for you, and be aware of the sensitivities you might have. Seriously, I use this stuff on everything. A refreshing toner for my face, soothes bug bites, and keeps my shaved skin smooth. (^ー^)ノ

For the record, I don't actually use Tend Skin on my junk. I've done it once, but I don't shave that with a razor.

I use Tend Skin on my face before bed. It does not smell fantastic, I agree. It'll clear out those sinuses though.

It's not that I specifically disagree with any of the advice here.. but..
I stay away from products that contain fragrance. Often, the fake product that is added to the soap or lotion to make it smell good is the same product that irritates the skin. I also watch for products that say "fragrance free" because most of them do contain "masking fragrances" that can also be irritants.

You can use sugar to exfoliate. It can remove excess fluid under the skin prior to shaving - promoting a closer shave and a more antimicrobial environment. It also means that you don't need to worry about all the bacteria growing in your exfoliation gloves/cloths.

Do you mean sugar mixed with oil? (or salt + oil) oil won't dissolve the sugar, otherwise I'd hesitate to use sugar alone on my genitals. Certain oils, like coconut and grapeseed have anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

you don't want to dissolve the sugar. you want to exfoliate with it.
actually.. it doesn't sound like you want to do that either.. it sounds like you don't like the sugar method. I'm totally ok with that.. I was simply offering an alternative to the sulfate jungle that is available at your local cosmetic retailer.

If it makes you feel safer, however, we use sugar in medical procedures.. admittedly, we rarely see medical emergencies related solely to hairy genitals.

I started waxing around two years ago. Ingrowns were always a huge problem for me (fair skin, DARK curly hair), but between waxing and using a product called Post Shave Balm by Dermologica, it's been a lot better. It doesn't have alcohol in it and it softens the skin. I'll admit, the stuff is pricey, but a little bit goes a long way, even though I use it once a day, so it lasts for a couple of months.

I like to mix sugar and honey. Or with oil. Depends on what I'm going for. Both work great. I use the oil and sugar mixture for body. Sometimes face, but I like the honey and sugar as a lip scrub. Then I moisturize with a dab of olive oil. :)

*takes notes*

Very fair skin shows every single little tiny imperfection. Blessing and a curse.

And afterwards it can go on a cracker.

Hard water deposits dull blades quick.

I rinse mine in 90% rubbing alcohol. I just drizzle it over the blade. Definitely lasts longer.

Sugar is a classic anti-bacterial. Used during the American Civil War as a way to prevent sepsis with wounds. Was a classic way to cure meats for storage. It absorbs water, crusts and encapsulates.
