What's the best song of all time?

No, it really isn't possible. But there's nothing wrong with exercising futility on a Sunday afternoon, is there? :)

I collect 50s, 60s music. Some time back a guy who ran juke boxes when the used vinyl records was asked if there was ever a song that was so popular that he had to replace the vinyl record more than once. He replied, only one:

Mack The Knife - Bobby Darin - 1959 #1

Rachmaninoff's Opus 51, Variations on a Theme of Paganini. You would recognize the melody if you heard it.

Led Zep's "kashmir?" sometimes it's too darn much.

Glenn Miller's "String of pearls?" Sometimes it's too rhythmic

The Beatles' "Yellow Submarine?" now, there's a thought!

Bob Dylan's "Desolation Road?" sometimes it's a bit wordy...

The Shins's "Pink Bullets?" sometimes it's too morose.

The Gorillaz' "19-2000?" I haven't gotten tired of it yet, but it's only been around for a decade.

Bach's "air on a G string?"

Too many for a definitive "best". However, I still have a direct-to-disc vinyl pressing from Scheffield Lab of "West of Oz" by Amanda McBroom. Amanda is the writer of "The Rose", made famous by Bette Midler from the 1979 movie. This original version of "The Rose" still gives me chills when I listen. Unbelievable recording engineering and vocal presence.

The problem is that each of us has tastes that differ so much that to get a consensus would be near impossible. What I think is the best of all time changes all the time. There are few I will always listen to, but I know they aren't the best I have ever heard, not by a long shot.

Currently there are two that I think are the greatest of all time...

Wizards in Winter by Trans Siberian Orchestra
Late Nights and Street Fights by Dirty Vegas

Sorry Micheal you're just piss in the wind.

The best selling song of all time is:

White Christmas - Bing Crosby - 1942

This question is impossible to answer without first identifying the criteria by which the wholly subjective "best song" is to be determined, and then obtaining a consensus agreement on the use of those criteria. Otherwise, the best that can be accomplished is a listing of personal favorites, or, by using objective measures, determining the most popular song of all time.

For sheer vitality, 'Sing, Sing, Sing' by the Benny Goodman Orchestra featuring Gene Krupa on drums and Harry James on trumpet is a standout. This version recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1938 lasts 12 minutes...solid swing and jazz all the way!

If you're not dancing in your chair listening to this number check your pulse, you're dead! :D

That is gorgeous.

Youtube recently expanded its time limits from ten to fifteen minutes, maybe someone can reload this in its entirety

"Bests" and "Favorites" lists are a particular peeve of mine. Kids have favorites. Kids have limited experience and understanding, so they have favorite foods and favorite colors and favorite songs. But adults are supposed to have wider ranges of experience and sensitivity and know that music can't be compared like cars or third basemen or Rocky sequels.

You can have a favorite Van Morrison song, or Bach fugue, or Sinatra song, or Jay Z rap, or Beethoven quartet, or even a particular piece of music you like listening to more than any other, but anyone who can say that any of these is "better" than the others needs to get out more.

I agree. We are multi-dimensional human beings, not flat drawn cartoon characters!

Someone here once started a thread challenging everyone to describe themselves in one word. I posted; "Shan't."

Sing, Sing, Sing...Gene Krupa on drums, Harry James on trumpet and Benny Goodman on licorice stick...does it get any better than this?

Yes, it does. Jackie Wilson's Higher and Higher played in a loop with the volume on 11 makes you foam at the mouth and rip your clothes. When the trumpets come in on the bridge like a squad of F-14's, I get chills so intense that my scalp shoots off my skull and starts dancing on the ceiling.

"Bests" and "Favorites" lists are a particular peeve of mine...

Locally, a man in his late 20s had his music system confiscated by a court because, despite several injunctions, he insisted on repeatedly playing the same track at maximum volume until 3 or 4am.

According to his interview with the local paper, he couldn't see why anyone should object because it is such a great song.

It has taken six months and several injunctions to stop the music. If he repeats the offence, the court will evict him from his council flat.

Edited for PS. This is a strong contender for "Worst Sung Song".

It's kind of funny how your second paragraph contradicts your first.

Some time back, I liven in a place where a boy seemed to need to play the same song, at very high volume and usually late at night. The neighbors complained. The scumbags finally responded. The scumbags would arrest the boy and then release him. The boy continued to play the same song, at the same volume and the same times. Then, several of the neighbors got together and did what's called in the technical language of Kung-FU, 'kicked the living crap' out of music boy. Music boy quit playing the song at high volume and late at night. I' of course, abhor violence, but it worked great in this one case.

The debate still rages about whether she was taking the mickey or really thought she was good and in tune.

There's too many to pick from:

But lately I'm digging on: 'Dream' by the Cranberries and 'Talk of the Town' by the Pretenders
