Ok- this thread is political, culterual economic all of the above. The question is: What country is the best country to live in/ be a citizen of. Feel free to nominate you're own or another but don't forget to say why. Discourse and disagreement is fine, but let's try not to attack persons, ok?

There is no best.
They are all best to me, because of the wonderful people here on Lit who live in them.

(I'm batting for the diplomatic nomination in the Literotica Annual Awards........might even buy me a........*gasp*.......frock.....for the occasion. )

USA

Land of the free, home of the brave. We are a distinct and warmly competative culture, we are opportunity and potential. We just about run the world.

But everybody's different.

I think of it much like I would think of "if I were to choose to work for a company", I believe "top of the game" is a solid endorsement for it. Law firms. Research Facilities. Educational Institutions. Nation States.

Canada.

We have a good economy and more importantly we make some effort to spread it around.

Your worth isn't determined by the size of your bank account.

Our educational system is good and there are enough supports that anyone can get a decent education regardless of their family's wealth.

Our medical system is for everybody. If you're sick, you can get help.

We support our cultural institutions.

We have our problems, but I would rather live here than anywhere else. It's my home.

If I lived in the States I would almost certainly be dead.

My wife recently spent a few weeks in the Black Forest and now Germany is her favorite country.

Excellent universal health care
happy, easy going, educated people
clean, beautiful, ancient villages
high standard of living
Clean, protected environment
Wonderful transportation system
Black Forest Cake

and beer. Lots of beer.

Sweetie, last time I took a chance, it took me 32 years to get out of it!!

But, I love being British, I love where I live (not saying, too small, I would be identified too easily), its beautiful, green, fills my heart every time I look over it.

I love the people, the idiosyncracies of the British race (that includes the Scots, Welsh and Irish), I love our quirkiness, our compassion for the underdog, and like RG, I'm so damn glad I live in a place where my entitlement to health care is not entirely dependent upon the contents of my wallet.

To me, Britain, and in my case, England, is the most wonderful place in the world. I wouldn't exchange its warmth and cosiness for almost anything (but there are those who could seriously tempt me. ;) )

:rose:

I have my priorities straight. I'd choose Italy, and particularly Venice. I am treated like and feel more a woman there than anywhere else.

I am fiercely patriotic and the instant answer is England. Beautiful scenery, free Health Service, good sport, good people.

However no country is perfect and the flood of chavs, Teflon Tony, house prices and public services does depress me at times. From what I saw of both Australia and New Zealand impressed me; they're both beautiful countries - hte South Island of New Zealand has some stunning glacial beauty - and the people seem friendly as.

Having said that, I could never emigrate. I'd like to stay in the Antipodes for a year at some point, but I'd never emigrate. England is my home and I will always miss the positives more than I hate the negatives.

America – the America far away from the politics and the war machines and the grasping greed.

There are many places in America that are so achingly beautiful they will break your heart while feeding your soul; where the people are sweet, loving and forgiving; where the air is clean and the pace is slow.

I’ve had California wines I’d proudly compare to some of the best French vintages. I’ve had Pennsylvania wines that taste like piss. I’ve had North Carolina wine that was made from the first American wine grape – the scuppernong. That tasted like piss, too – and I bought a case of the shit before I realized it.

America’s greatness is derived from its vastness; its natural beauty; the kindness and basic goodness of many of its people. You can move into small town America knowing no one, make a stop at the hardware store to pick up a tool, and suddenly the clerk is introducing you to everyone in the store – inviting you to his church – making sure that you feel a part of the community.

That America, the America under attack by the Walmarts and the McDonalds and the Office Depots, that’s the America I love. The America where every town has a ‘square’ and the people all go to the stadium on Friday night for the football game.

That America is still out there, somewhere, trying to weather the storm, trying to survive in a world gone crazy. That America is the equal of any country in the world.

From everything I know about Australia- that's my pick.

Goodness, I don't have any good reasons to post- erm, nice weather, laid back people and lot's of water:)

Feel free to ad support if you also wish to nominate Austrailia.

Oh yea, and after seeing lord of the rings- New Zealand. For pure beauty. I'd also love to see the Irish countryside.

The Blue States of America.

It's a work in progress. So far we have a flag. It says, "I'm with Stupid."

It's the best flag, and that's a good start.

old whinge

"America" is not just the U.S.A.

Go see The Motorcycle Diaries and learn about another America. Yanquis! Sheesh!

Monaco, without a doubt!

Fantastic climate, convenient location and the kind of shallow people who are interested only in sex, drinking and debauchery passing through on a daily basis. (Well, some of them are also interested in making money.)

Were it not for an unfortunate misunderstanding with the police, I might well be there today.

JMHO.

Its a step up from the last one they had... "Why won't people listen to our pretentious bullshit?"

Grand Cayman. Awesome diving :)

Serious reef damage this summer, so they say. (Third or fourth hurricane from the left.) Little Cayman is fabulous and didn't sustain much damage, but it doesn't qualify as a country.

Cake is good. But not with beer.

Yes, well, things might be that way for some individuals, but most people would be fine.

I'm glad you're not dead, rg. If you happen to slip below the border to the USA and anything fatal threatens, we'll try to get you back to safety. Canada sounds nice.
