We're trying Netflix for a couple of months to catch up on stuff we haven't seen. But I've pretty much been through all of the suggested shows, so I'm looking for new recommendations. I'm especially interested in stuff that will play instantly. I really like documentaries and good indy films. I'm not into Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Horror, cartoons (anime included) or anything that includes torture. I don't watch TV commercials, so I haven't seen movie previews for 4 or so years.

So what should I add to my queue, or what are your favorite movies that you think I should definitely see?

In Terms of TV (most of these are instant play, but don't hold me to it):
Dexter, Weeds, The Tudors, Pushing Daisies (it kind of is fantasy, but really it's a comedy), Anything from National Geographic

In Terms of Movies:
Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, The Kids are All Right, Atonement, Burn After Reading, The Last Station, Brick, 500 Days of Summer, Thank You for Smoking, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, But I'm a Cheerleader, Dan in Real Life, Hot Fuzz, Sunshine Cleaning, Religulous... I could go on and on

Thank God for Netflix!!

i am getting caught up on the 24 series
lie to me

I happen to like horror movies so have seen alot of them

Oh, seconded on Weeds and Dexter, however Dexter does have a wee bit of torture in it. Prison Break is quite good as well.

As far as movies I'm quite useless, I prefer tv shows to movies personally.

I am a Netflix Junkie, with 153 different subjects in my queue -- too many to list. But, starting tomorrow, I will be getting Indie Sex (a documentary seriers), which sounds very good. I think it is about both G&L and straight sex in movies. Also, Pornography: A Thriller. Very gay. Next up is The Celuloid Closet. Another documentary about gays and lesbians playing straight roles and their careers. Persecution, blacklisted, to sucess. You can also type Gina Gershon in the search field -- I think everything she has done has pretty blatant sex -- mostly lesbian. And, personally, I would love to be one of those who could truthfully say they kissed her. Finally, go to browse DVD's, and click on gay and lesbian. You will find several hundred to choose from. Unfortunately, most G&L are not available for instant streaming, but I get 3 at a time, so get enough through the regular mail.

And, finally, although Netflix advertises that they do not stock adult material, this isn't alway true. I have seen a few that have full nudity, including erect penis, oral, vaginal, and anal. As well as cum shots.

Ed, I just watched Precious. Put that at the top of your instant list if you haven't seen it already. I'm sure both you and your wife will enjoy it immensely, even though it's difficult subject matter.

ArchLady, I'll have to check out some of those, for sure. I'm a big NatGeo fan, too, though I think I've seen all of the ones that have interested me so far. I wish there were more!

I'll check out some of the G&L stuff, EG. I just watched Boys Don't Cry last night after a documentary on the MPAA rating system (which was really good, too, BTW; I think it might be called Not Yet Rated for those who are interested) reminded me I wanted to see it.

thinking i need to spend some more time on netflix and less time on here ...lol

These are my recommendations:

The Majestic - generally not a Jim Carrey fan, but he was fabulous in this movie

The Blind Side - based on the true story of NFL player Michael Oher and the family who took him in off the streets

Eat, Pray, Love - haven't seen this yet, but heard really good things about it

Ray - based on the life of musician Ray Charles. Jamie Foxx was superb.

I also like HBO's Hung: about a struggling HS basketball coach who decides to nightlight as a gigolo in order to make ends meet.

If you'd like to watch tv and cable series - commercial free, check out

You can search for your favorite shows. So far I've watched the entire Deadliest Catch series, most of Top Gear, and I've just started Dirty Jobs. All of it is commercial free, but depending on who is feeding it, there may be time delays after 45 to 60 minutes of viewing.

I'll second the vote for The Blind Side. Excellent move! I also really enjoyed the latest Star Trek, which was kind of a prequel to the original series. I've heard that Invictus is good, though have not seen it myself yet.

TV series available via instant viewing: Better off Ted, Dexter, and Top Gear (the British series)
Documentaries available via instant viewing: Food Inc
Movies: Sex Drive

Some of these are only available on DVD, but some can be watched instantly as well.

I wish I could remember more than that, but I'm not much on memorizing names. I've been impressed with the documentaries I've watched so far. If I could keep my wife off my account, I might actually get one of the movies sent to me that I want (if you didn't know you can create multiple profiles within an account and divide movie allocations among them although only one account can view instantly on a computer).

By the way, I can't comment enough about Better off Ted. I was so freak'n pissed when they canceled it while The Office kept getting all these awards. I can't stand The Office! Okay, enough ranting.

I'll put in another vote for Weeds. Absolutely love it.

Arrested Development is also one of my favorites.

If you like documentaries, Netflix carries many done by Ken Burns and I think he does great work. I would try the Civil War ones first.

My SO said the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was wonderful, now he wants to read the book.

I got to use Netflix more. I forget I have it on my Wii. I'm slowly getting though Dexter when i got free time or nothing on TV. i have Precious on my queue and a lot of documentaries. And rewatch Dead Like Me. I loved that show.

To ArchLady and anyone else who suggested Weeds, THANK YOU! I'm about halfway through Season 4 and totally hooked. ;) Another fantastic show from Showtime (I'm also a devoted L Word fan).

Right now the Band of brothers series. AMAZING!

Yeah, we love that series. I wish they'd come out with a new one that was equally well done.

I thought I'd add that I'm watching the Vice Guide to Travel series right now because I bet many of you would enjoy it. It's basically a travel show where they go to places and do things that no one else dares to, like talking to the old warlords of Liberia, going to North Korea, renting a Real Doll in Japan, going to Chernobyl, seeking out dirty bombs and weapons in Bulgaria and Pakistan, etc. It's hilarious, though-provoking and scary, all at the same time.

SJ! holy cats!

Holy cats! It 'tis me!

I have got to stop dropping by a colleagues office because every time I do I walk about with at least 20 suggestions for my Netflix queue.

And since her office is right next door to mine, it's difficult to not drop by her office!

Food Inc is actually a REALLY good documentary. It's kind of hard to watch, but ultimately very rewarding and educational.

I'd have to also mention "The Cove". It's about the Dolphin fishing and abuse in Japan and all the toxic stuff we ingest that turn up in canned fish and stuff like that. It's really jaw-dropping, eye-opening and very hard to watch (this one does have graphic scenes).

But very worth watching.

I'd also like the 2nd Burn After Reading. One of my favorites from the Coen brothers.

i've come to the conclusion that the coen brothers like making films that are designed specifically to emphasize all the things in movies that i don't care for.

I have to add in "The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert"... currently watching it and almost forgot (but not really lol) how great it is. It's an Australian comedy about 3 drag queens taking a cross country trip in the outback on a giant bus. "To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything" owns everything to this film :D
