I have children telling me all the time that reading is boring and crap. I disagree wholely and believe that a read a day keeps the insanity at bay

As they say you can tell a person by their music collection so the same can be said for their bookcase to

Im reading Stephen King & Peter Straub - The Black House
& Bill Bryson- Notes From A small Island

Oh and I love to say I'm reading that 30's something girlie stuff like briget Jones.

Pisses everyone off no end.

I always have a crowd of books I am reading, but to name a few current ones...

1. Words of My Perfect Teacher by Patrul Rinpoche
2. EMDR, Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing by Shapiro and Forrest
3. The Sexual Teachings of the White Tigress, Secrets of the Female Taoist Masters byHsi Lai

I am presently rereading a couple of old favorites, Red Storm Rising by Tom Clancy and Boulder Dam by Zane Grey.

Something New

for me at least. A collection of short stories by Edith Templeton, called The Darts of Cupid. It was reviewed in the NYT Books on Easter. The author is now in her 80s, but the stories are written from different POVs throughout her life.

The language is lush and creamy and refined without being stilted. It's beautiful (so far). The title story is about a woman working for the American Army in England during the War and the man she falls in love with. Slight BDSM overtones:

"You have that marvelous cold skin," he said. "You can lie for hours in bed with a man and you never get sticky and sweaty."

I did not speak.

"You are so exquisitely make," he said, "I could break every bone in your body."

"Go to hell," I said.

"I shan't go to hell," he said, "but I may go to the office."

I like it.

i just finished The Girl in the Flammable Skirt by Aimee Bender. since finals are coming up i probably won't start anything new until the break.

Impressive, just pet. You must be one of these integrated persons, somatically sound. I think I met one of you once.
I've got nothing against them....

Has Hsi Lai any hints on lionness seduction? Did the White Tiger say anything about those other big cats?

It is actually Green Dragons (men) who are seduced, their essence tapped for its regenerative powers, bestowing immortality to the Tigress... care to contribute to a good cause?

What happens to these green Dragons after they're tapped? I presume there is some reward, like perpetual nookie or soemthing?

Quick post to ask further has anyone read Enduring Love - Ian McEwan fantastic

Lately...

Entering Space by Robert Zubrin - How (and why we should get humanity into space. Now.

The Gilded Dinosaur by Mark Jaffe - E D Cope and O C Marsh and their intense competition for dinosaur fossils in the late 1800s.

The Legacy of Heorot by Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle & Steven Barnes - good escapist SF just for fun

Red Mars, Blue Mars & Green Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson - for the second time, because its one of the best explorations of one of makind's possible futures that I've ever read.

That was a great book, Paphian, there is also a sequel out to it that was a good read too. Called Beowulf's Children

I am currently rereading (for about the 20th time) Armor by John Steakely, another great SF book.

This reminded me of Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb:

Mandrake: Jack... Jack, listen, tell me, ah... when did you first become, well, develop this theory.

Ripper:

Well, I ah, I I first became aware of it, Mandrake, during the physical act of love.

Mandrake:

sighs fearfully

Ripper:

Yes a profound sense of fatigue, a feeling of emptiness followed. Luckily I was able to interpret these feelings correctly: loss of essence.

Mandrake:

Yes...

Ripper:

I can assure you it has not recurred, Mandrake. Women... women sense my power, and they seek the life essence. I do not avoid women, Mandrake, but I do deny them my essence.

Mandrake:

Heh heh... yes.

Where did this come from? Are you still with the first woman you ever made love to? If not... have you killed all the others? All benefit from an encounter. Essence is cum. It is the cum which is seen as a gift. It is this gift which is sought.

I've read that book, it really is incredible.

I'm now reading Acceptable Risk by Robin Cook and Foundation's Edge by Isaac Asimov. I started them both a few days ago and am just about done.

Maybe if I stop reading so many books at one time for pleasure I'll start to read my hundred dollar textbooks a little more often.

:D

Right now, I'm in the middle of 3 books:

Lydia's Awakening, an erotic novel, book one of a set

Winnie the Pooh Anniversary collection

Lord of the Rings, the Return of the King.

Reading but not enjoying it

Just reading out of over 10 different nursing books .lots of interesting things to learn and lots to go through to find it.

Hehe Mellon, I know just what you mean. I'm working on a series called "The Dark is Rising" by Susan Cooper. It's filled with all sorts of British mythology and folklore, centering around King Arthur-type stuff. Technically, it's a series for young adults, but it plays to readers of all ages. It inspired me greatly as a kid, and I have been heartbroken lately because I realized how much of an impact it made on me, but I couldn't remember the name of the series or the author. But I've got it now... Delicious! :D I highly recommend it.
