An avatar on the internet "in general" is a little picture that you "use" to represent yourself on the internet. Since the others can't see you for real you make a "presence" by a pcture you choose. Taht can be a picture of yourself or any fantasy image you feel comfortable with representing you.
Here on lit the avatars are the pictures under your nick name - like my blinking eyes.

The "here at lit" description is correct - we use the term very loosely at best, and in general on the internet as a whole it is used incorrectly. Think "icon" and you'll be getting a sense of how it's being used in this context.
This usage is one of those "litte" mistakes that can really irk a person.
The more traditional meaning of the term is to describe a mortal, generally human, form adopted by a god (my, aren't we all vain?) Avatars are manifestations "in animal/human form" of power, or representations of those powerful beings, or a display if you will.

Just to add to everything that's been said already, you'll have the chance to create your own avatar once you achieve 100 posts. At that point, you can adjust your personal settings on Lit and include an image from your computer of not more than 150 x 150 pixels to insert below your user name on the boards.
