One of my stories had an amazing comment that left me stunned:
“Brunette hair is BLACK, not brown.”

What would you do with such a comment?
Delete it?
Leave it so the writer looks stupid?
Send a PM to suggest he google ‘brunette’?
Post a public comment?
Some combination of the above?

I'd leave it. It may be inaccurate, but it's also benign.
I've removed only one comment on any of my stories, and it was an attack on my integrity.

I'd leave it. It reflects poorly only on the one who wrote it and I wouldn't be surprised if other comments correct him/her.

Yeah, I don't see a reason to remove it.

I'd have an urge to post a reply citing some evidence or examples to the contrary, but I don't know that it's a worthwhile impulse.

I would leave it and say nothing.

It's not nasty enough to delete.

But it's not worth responding to.

I'd leave it. Its only insulting to the person who wrote it. Let them look like a dope. Over time someone will comment in replay to them.

Others have covered these points, I just wanted to highlight this one.

It only reflects on you, as a writer, to whatever vanishingly tiny coterie of readers who think like the insane commenter. IMHO, the vast majority of your readers will see that and shake their head in wonderment. Maybe one of them will even comment back. Leave it to them.

I actually differentiate my characters with ‘black’ hair from my ‘brunette’ characters. It’s always in my head that ‘brunette’ is a vast range of browns, but doesn’t actually include black. I often break down my brunette characters by further description. But, that comment, wow.

My personal rule is if it is insulting, derogatory, demeaning, or it aggravates me I delete it.

I received an email today via Lit from a reader who has been a member for only three weeks and hasn't written any stories regarding my Anal story "I Posted An Ad." The comment was, "If you think you can kiss a woman's tits whilst fucking her in the ass, think again."

In other words, I'm clueless. And yet in the anal sex scene she is riding him cowgirl and leans over. I chose not to respond and tell him in fact, I have done both. Why bother?

Everything everyone has already said.

In addition to which I don’t respond to stupid comments because it would be very, very unusual for the critic to come back in which case they’ll never read your response.

I always thought brunette is black hair and brown is just brown, but that's not really the point here.

If that's the worst comment you got then you got off light considering the terrible comments we see some people make in the comments section. Sometimes it's best to leave it there and not worry about it.

I've had plenty of bad comments in my stories that I leave alone. I only delete the ones that seem abusive and go too far in their rants. I don't mind criticism, we can learn from it, but there is a limit.

Gee, he's not going to like my anal stories where, gasp, the analee (to coin a word) is lying on his or her back. Gosh, how novel, NOT to take someone from behind during anal sex.

Have some fun with it. Make your next story feature an auburn haired person. Then a strawberry blonde A raven haired person. See what this person has to say.

I've come to realize that readers skim scenes, then spout off about something that had they read all the way through they'd say "oh, okay" but they don't.

Why stop there? We live in a time where blue, green, pink etc...hair color is right on the shelf with the standards. Start writing stories with blue haired women and green haired women.

In one of my novels the main character, a lesbian witch who owns a fetish club points to a group of young women with multi colored hair and says "Look at them, they're like skittles, and I want to taste the rainbow!"

Personally, I would respond to the guy, but also realize that it would be useless, as he probably wouldn't come back to see if anyone did respond to him. Even if he did, he probably would just ignore your response once he figured out that he was wrong.

Then we would find him over in the How To forum wanting to know how to delete a comment he made on a story. :D

I'm not saying I have done something like this; written a story to spite an obnoxious commenter.

But I am not saying I haven't,.

I would leave the comment & ignore it. Wankers making unsolicited, uninformed comments on your work is just how it is. They don't merit the time it takes to respond.

I wrote a story to spite the burn the bitch loving wives crowd, put out a burn the bastard one.

Odd thing is the score only went as low as 4.2, and over the years its crept up to get a red H.

Not sure how I feel about that.

My entry in the 2021 Halloween contest was a statement of my contempt for the incel crowd.
Watching the score bounce around, it seemed like it was 5 stars or 1 star reviews and nothing in between. I sort of expected some hurt feelings from the "women owe me sex" crowd, but I got less blow-back than I anticipated.

You posted in EH, less incels there, they mostly hang in LW jerking off to burn the bitch stories and screaming impotently at all other stories.

Drop one there and they will have apoplexy

I have considered doing a follow-up story that would amount to "how not to incel".
Undoubtedly, if it got their attention, it would spark outrage, as it would amount to "take some damn responsibility for your life and stop being a pathetic whiner".

Hmmmm....
