What would you do if ?

Say you had a registered account here and then left for a spell.

You turn off your pms because you don't want have them pile up in your absence. When you come back and see a post you had made, you notice that pms are indeed turned back on.

'Hmmm, that's odd,' you might think.

When you type in your password to turn them back off, you realize your password doesn't work anymore. You do the obvious thing and type in your email account to get a new password and it says that the email is not recognized within the system.

How do you prove that you are you[b/] to the sysop?

Would your mind start to wonder if somebody usurped your account and is perhaps sending other Lit members pms in your name? Do you consider making a new account like Sparky but hate the fact that somebody may or may not be using your account not to post (obviously) but to contact people you know in secret, spoofing you in the process and you simply just don't know?

Any thoughts on what you might do next?

Silly of me to give my password away.. but she was so cute.

thanks for responding

I thought of that Emerald_eyed, but how would one go about proving the account should be closed?

Could you imagine the chaos it would bring if it was easy to write Laurel and have accounts closed down simply based upon saying I'm who I am?

LTR, I never gave out my password to anyone on Lit. And yeah, I could start all over, but it's kinda freaking me out that someone may have hacked my password, turned on my pms and re-directed the email connecting to my account?

Just pm or email Laurel.

She can fix it. She can fix anything.

Maybe she can put your old name on a new account.

If I can help, let me know.

I think she can fix almost anything if only I could prove I'm who I say I am and not somebody claiming to be somebody else in order to get an account shut down, ya know?

Unless she has records of everybody's puid when they originally registered...hmmm, prehaps. That's a lot of logs though, shew.

Funny thing is, I can't email or pm her without being logged in.

Guess I'll go re-register, heh. The thought of somebody doing this on purpose is kinda creepy, at best.

Thanks again.

Um, paranoid?

Imagine coming onto the boards only to see a post you made showing that functions have been altered, such as your pms turned on or off when you know how you left them.

Now, try to imagine your password not working but when you type in your email account it says that the system doesn't recognize your email account, at all.

Hmm, serious glitch in the system, seeming to only affect my account, but I'm not paranoid yet. Just kinda freaked out by it, because there happens to be a possibity that something funky is indeed going on.

If this happened a lot, you'd see thread after thread about it.

Email Laurel from the address the account was started from. That is how you prove it.

You'll have to notify Laurel that you are emailing her, so starting a second name might not be a bad idea.

If you're using the same ISP, you could also have her verify IP addresses.

It's not that hard and you do leave tracks when you use the web.

Was your password something like
"password"?
Open Sesame?
0000?

Hot diggity!

I want to read all of my PM's to you.

(in your account, of course)

Sheesh,I better clean my box out,I'd hate for you to see whats in there.

It might shock you.

I would not naively try to solve the problem and just get my name back. They will just cover their tracks if you do that, and get you again in an even more diabolical manner.

I would return secretly. Spend months covertly stalking around under a variety of identities, trying to find out who did it to me, and how many of them there are. Hack into Laurel's system and others as necessary, in search of those who are fucking with me.

When I found them -- and they clearly really are trying to get you -- I would exact a revenge that would make what they have been doing to you look like a Sunday afternoon picnic...

Quick, delete this thread before they realize you are on to them!
