As the title says..

I'm from Sheffield, South Yorkshire, UK.
Its famous for:
Inventing Stainless and crucible steel.
The 2 oldest football teams in the UK.
The film the full Monty
Sean bean, Elizabeth henstridge, the members of the bands pulp, arctic monkeys and def leppard were born here.

As for notable people who were born or live here....

James Hinchcliffe ....Indy car driver
Sandra Post....former LPGA golfer, has a park named after her up the street from our home
Ron MacLean....Hockey Night In Canada host with Don Cherry, see him around fairly often
Lots of former & current NHL players
I guess this town is known for having a huge Ford plant

My birth town of Boone, IA is famous for:

Birth place of Mamie Eisenhower, wife of Pres. Dwight Eisenhower.
The first Casey's General Store convenience store open there in 1968.
The film Twister was filmed there in 1996.

Our town is just average small town USA. But not far away a town that used to be famous for these words;

'If it plays in Peoria it'll play anywhere'

Also prostitution and racial problems were.... are a great reason to visit.
 
As a born and bred sarf Londoner we have had our fair share of famous peeps.
The prime meridian is placed here.(We gave the world east and west):D
James Cook and Sir Walter Raleigh set sail from the dockyard.
Sir Ernest Shackleton lived here as did Edmund Halley
Movie stars Jude Law and Jason Staham are a couple of local stars from the silver screen also Elsa Lanchester if your memory is even longer.
WG Grace Ian Wright and his son Shaun Wright Phillips for the sporting firmament.
Kate Bush and Charlene Soria are a couple of pop stars
Millwall football club. Whose number one fan song "we are millwall no one likes us" has never been more true since it was placed as a potential terror target due to this story

Mental hospital for the criminally insane - has had Charles Manson and Tex Watson in it, as well as the drummer (can't remember his name) who played on the Derek and the Dominoes album who killed his mother using the curved part of a hammer to the skull....
