Depending on what part of the year...I was either 6 1/2 or 7 years old. I think I was busy playing with my trucks in the dirt in the backyard and unbeknownst to my dad, was busy digging a hole because I wanted to go to China.
When my dad found the hole, he wasn't very happy...he was cutting the grass and stepped in it. I had it covered with some twigs and such because I was trying to keep it a secret.

Started the first grade in the fall of '62. Learned what a bomb shelter was. Had air-raid drills in school--damn that Castro anyway. We thought if we stored canned-goods under the basement stair we could survive a thermo-neclear holocaust. Well I was only in the first grade.
