Just curious. If you don't write, bs is welcome.

Ummmm, errrr, all of the above?
Tough questions to answer. usually I write for me, although I do take hints and ideas from my wife. (Once I wrote a story for a friend of my wife. She loved it, he loved it, and I almost got raped. Damned morals.)
How long I write at any one time depends on a lot of things. How buzzed I get, what's on TV or other interfering items, and how long I can sit before my ass falls asleep.
Sometimes it takes longer to write than to revise a story. Depends on the story.
As for BS, well, these two bulls were out in a field talking about the cows they had taken. The first said he had taken almost two hundred that year alone.
"Yeah but," replied the other. "While you were sleeping I took all of them in this field."

As a would-be writer, I'm brilliant, insightful, original, courageous, fast, prolific and wealthy. The ideas just come to me; my would-be stories practically write themselves. I reject film offers, until Redford approaches me and says the Sundance Film Festival is ready to screen its first pornographic film, and my would-be novella is the only material worth considering.

Edited to add: I would be humble, too. Most likely.

type of writer

I write to relive stress. I write for myself I write about thing that inspires me.

For my stories here, so far they've pretty much been created as they've been written. I'm at work on a novel, and I know the story, it's just the details that need working out.

Do you put more time into writing or revising?

Definitely more time into writing, but then again, I'm just getting started.

Do you work better under pressure of a deadline?

Definitely better with a deadline, that makes me get down to work.

How long do you usually work on your writing in one sitting?

Depends. Sometimes the muse is upon me and I can work for hours. Others, I have to make myself put three words down.

Do you prefer to work on your writing over a number of days, weeks or months?

The stories I've posted here were written all in one sitting (and it probably shows). Longer works obviously require longer.

Do you write for your audience or yourself?

Both, I think. I obviously enjoy writing or I wouldn't do it.......then you sit back and hope someone else likes what you've put out there. Actually, maybe it's more for me....a form of therapy...fantasy in written form instead of just in my mind.

How do you procrastinate?

You name it! I am the queen of procrastination, but then again, give me a deadline and I somehow manage to get it done.

Great questions!

A combination, depends whether it is a short or novella length story. Shorts generally come from seeing an ending, (or beginning) and writing backwards (or forwards). Longer stories require planning and thought to the story line, structure, relationships.

Do you put more time into writing or revising?
Probably equal. I like to leave a 'finished' piece for a few days and then read and revise.

Do you work better under pressure of a deadline?
Unlike almost everything else in my life, I cannot write fiction under pressure, at least, I have never needed to.

How long do you usually work on your writing in one sitting?
Anything from a few minutes to many hours.

Do you prefer to work on your writing over a number of days, weeks or months?
Preference is for writing in 'blocks' of time. Sometimes write nothing for days, weeks due to other events, but all the time working the next passage of writing; then clear my head for a period of concentrated writing.

Do you write for your audience or yourself?
Both from time to time. I have written stories that will never be read, just to see if I could write that style. If I'm writing for a Lit. catagory, definitely the audience is uppermost.

What manner of porn do you write?
I tend to concentrate on relationships and what attracts one person to another. I don't write 'sex for sex sake'.

How do you procrastinate?
I'm here, drinking coffee, collecting thoughts, smiling at idiosyncrasies.

Re: Re: What type of lit writer/would-be writer are you?

Good thread. I am a sucker for this kind of surveys. :)

Do you write only when you know what you want to write or make it up as you go?

I always have some kind of idea wherre I want to go with a story. My problem is never making up a story, but actually filling it with nouns, adjectives and stuff.

Do you put more time into writing or revising?

Not much revising at all. Only to correct spelling errors, bad grammar and rewrite the occational weirdo paragraph. It usually comes out the way I want it at the first attempt.

Do you work better under pressure of a deadline?

I wouldn't say that the result is of better quality under deadline pressure, but that means that I actually get things done, and get a result.

How long do you usually work on your writing in one sitting?

Differs very much depending on what kind of things I write. If it is my own writing, for pleasure alone, and no deadline in sight, anything from five minutes to an hour. If it is writing in a context (for someone, or for work) on a deadline, I can take a 24 hour sitting with nothing but food and toilet breaks.

Do you prefer to work on your writing over a number of days, weeks or months?

WHen I write for me (like my still on progress Lit project) I let it take whatever time it trakes, only write whenever the mood strikes now and then. When I write on deadline, I prefer to get it done and away as son as possible. So if I know that a piece takes two days to write, I usually starts writing it three of forur days before the deadline.

Do you write for your audience or yourself?

I create stories for myself. I write them down for an audience. My "natural" media for writitng fiction is scripts for film, theatre or comics. So when I write prose, it is a chore I go through to get it out to an audience, nothing else. Sometimes an audience of one, sometimes as published work. (Only non profit grassroot publication so far, but who knows?...)

How do you procrastinate?

Other than yapping here? Yapping at other places, and watching movies. But really, I have no time to procrastinate. All my spare time is filled with tons of other must-do stuff.

wishfulthinking said:
Do you write only when you know what you want to write or make it up as you go?

I only start writing when I have a plot outline fixed.

Do you put more time into writing or revising?

About two-thirds writing/one third revising but I do revise as I go. My 'Flawed Red Silk' series are my un-revised NaNoWriMo output.

Do you work better under pressure of a deadline?

Yes. The competitions usually push me to write.

How long do you usually work on your writing in one sitting?

Anything from half an hour to five hours. NaNoWriMo was completed in two to three hours a day (and I wrote parts of other stories during that month).

Do you prefer to work on your writing over a number of days, weeks or months?

I prefer to complete a story or chapter in days. If it extends to weeks I take a long time to get back into that particular story. I have 65 stories posted but many more are awaiting completion. I am more likely to start a new story than to complete an old one but I try to complete at least one old one a month - that will take the next six years at least.

Do you write for your audience or yourself?

Mainly for myself, but I do try to write for specific fetishes, some of which do not appeal to me personally. The weirder the fetish, the harder the story is to write, but the appreciation can be good because there are so few stories about that fetish. My ultimate challenge was 'South Indian Women's Hairy Armpits' - I tried but couldn't maintain my interest. The audience wanted 'sweaty' as well as 'hairy'. That turned my inspiration off.

What manner of porn do you write?

Porn with a storyline, and development. Sometimes too literary - My Gulliver's Travels are too close to Jonathan Swift. Sometimes implied or too cerebral so that some readers don't notice the sex. Sometimes I take experiments too far and fail. I don't write good wanking material.

How do you procrastinate?

Answering posts on AH.

Just curious. If you don't write, bs is welcome.

Og

Thanks, Wishful, cool thread.

Do you write only when you know what you want to write or make it up as you go?

Bit of both. I usually have the basic idea in my mind, but once I come down to sit and write it, yep, I generally make it up as I go along. I write my novels that way, and I find it to be the most fun way of doing it; it's like reading a book as I'm writing one - I never have a clue where the plot is going. Takes a bit of brain power, though, to watch out for inconsistencies and so on.

Do you put more time into writing or revising?

Probably about the same, especially with longer pieces. I always leave them for a few weeks, once finished, then go back and start the editing prcoess.

Do you work better under pressure of a deadline?

I don't work that well under pressure, but I do work well if I have a strict schedule to stick to.

How long do you usually work on your writing in one sitting?

Anything up to five hours. Like Og, my NaNo novel was also written in two to three hours per day, every day, for 26 days. I love writing like that.

Do you prefer to work on your writing over a number of days, weeks or months?

It all depends on the length of the piece. For shorts I let to get them done and out of the way inside a week or two. Novels take months.

Do you write for your audience or yourself?

For myself, always. The audience for my particular tastes and style is actually pretty small, but that doesn't matter. I enjoy what I write, that's the most important thing, if others enjoy it, too, and there is a market out there for it, all the better!

What manner of porn do you write?

Primarily erotic horror and hardcore erotica. Within Lit, nonconesent/reluctance is one of my favourite categories.

How do you procrastinate?

Posting here; daydreaming; writing personal emails; talking on the phone; taking my dog out for runs; exercising; reading.

Thoughtful, fun, good questions

I definitely write as I go, made up on the fly. Topic is identified, but I can be surprised at the end how it went.

I have no deadlines with my stories. I write, when they are done, they are done.

I work a little, or for several hours at a time. Depends on the distractions that may be surrounding in my environment. Again, I am a closet author, nobody knows. So if family is around, nothing gets written.

I have a tendency to write very fast. Longest story to write took a couple of days. Another day or two for edits, rereads, and submitting. Hopefully, that does not show in its' quality.

I write for an audience, but it must be fun for me. So, if I am happy with the focus and intensity of the story, I believe that the audience will also be pleased.

I have written several category stories. I write for fun of writing, and have focused on popular categories. I guess I am a category whore. It's interesting to me that an Incest/Taboo category is so popular. All I do is write about male/female sexual relationships, add the age/gender/father-daughter roles, and whoa, it fits the category. And it gets lots of reads, votes, etc.

Ah, procrastination. Most comes with spending time in the AH. Daydreaming about Lou....... Otherwise, I work, spending time on the important stuff. Gotta pay the bills.

I do enjoy the environment here, with the authors, stories, and a variety of threads. Easy to procrastinate here!

I at least have an inspiration for my story when I sit down. But I don't plot out in advance.

Do you put more time into writing or revising?

revising? Just kidding. I spend more time writing, I think.

Do you work better under pressure of a deadline?

According to my experiences in college, under deadline is at least effective. I think the work produced on my own time is of higher quality.

How long do you usually work on your writing in one sitting?

I have a "real" job, so writing happens around my responsibilities for that job. But I generally sit down and write for a few hours.

Do you prefer to work on your writing over a number of days, weeks or months?

Short stories are generally done in one sitting. Multipart stories take weeks or months to finish. My novel is moving into the over one year mark.

Do you write for your audience or yourself?

Me, primarily. But I'm totally pysched that other people like my work.

What manner of porn do you write?

Um, whatever strikes my fancy at a given moment. That can mean fetish, fantasy, fanfic, poetry, whatever.

How do you procrastinate?

hanging out here, watching tv, phone

Do you write only when you know what you want to write or make it up as you go?

I have a loose framework in my mind before I start, but most of the time I am surprised how it ended when I finish it.

Do you put more time into writing or revising?

I put a lot of time into revising. Probably 2/3 of my time is revising.

Do you work better under pressure of a deadline?

Unlike other things, I don't work better under pressure when it comes to writing. I can do it, but prefer not to.

How long do you usually work on your writing in one sitting?

Usually takes 2 - 4 weeks to get a story finished, simply because it has to wait until I have the time. But in between I can think things out in my head.

Do you prefer to work on your writing over a number of days, weeks or months?

After 2 weeks I get to the point where I need closure!

Do you write for your audience or yourself?

Both, but mostly for me. I figure if I like it, others must too. But if not, they will hit the back button.

What manner of porn do you write?

I started out mostly stroke, but now it is mostly story. I've played around a little bit in between. For example in one story I did the sex stuff at the beginning and for those who wanted a story to keep reading, and the response was good.

How do you procrastinate?

Surfing, emails, AH, TV. Have perfected the art.

Just curious. If you don't write, bs is welcome.

If only I could bullshit as good as Sher!

Mostly make it up as I go along.

Do you put more time into writing or revising?
Writing, definitely. I do most of my editing as I write

Do you work better under pressure of a deadline?
Probably, but I hate to do it.

How long do you usually work on your writing in one sitting?
Until the muse has left me and I've run out of things to write

Do you prefer to work on your writing over a number of days, weeks or months?
Um, I'm not sure. Depends on how long the piece I'm writing is. I've proved I can write 50,000 words in a month. If it's a short 2,000 word story, I'll probably sit down and bang it out in one 30 minute sitting.

Do you write for your audience or yourself?
For me, always. If anyone else likes what I write, that's a bonus.

What manner of porn do you write?
Experimental, for me at least. I write erotica just to see if I can do it.

How do you procrastinate?
I come and talk to you bunch of reprobates.

raphy said:

Reprobates? I resent that impli.....wait, no I don't. Nevermind.

Do you write only when you know what you want to write or make it up as you go?
Both. I have a general idea of what I want to do before I start writing. Sometimes, I'll even produce an outline, if my idea is sufficiently detailed. However, the story always changes during the actual writing.

Many of my stories are long and fairly complex. I generally find myself rearranging and revising scenes to fit into the whole. In most cases, I finish multi-part stories before posting any of the chapters.

Do you put more time into writing or revising?
I revise as I write, so it's hard to separate the two.

Do you work better under pressure of a deadline?
I've never written fiction to a deadline.

How long do you usually work on your writing in one sitting?
Several hours is common. I'm a slow writer. Unless I'm just making a quick change, I don't even consider trying to write unless I have at least an hour available.

Do you prefer to work on your writing over a number of days, weeks or months?
My long stories take weeks. Sometimes, I run out of inspiration and put the story aside for months.

Do you write for your audience or yourself?
Myself. I don't have a good feel for my audience, since I don't get a lot of feedback, except for the "Great Story!!!" kind. I like to think my audience consists of thoughtful readers who like a lot of hard-core sex, with well-developed characters and plots.

What manner of porn do you write?
I try to create realistic characters and situations while still having a lot of hard-core sex. I like all sorts of sexual combinations; male-female, male-male, female-female and groups. There's usually same gender paring in the group scenes. Some of my stories have (generally playful) BDSM elements, but I'm not really a BDSM writer.

My stories rarely fit neatly into categories. I generally finish a story and decide which category is most appropriate.

How do you procrastinate?
I procrastinate from writing fiction by composing music and procrastinate from composing by writing fiction. If I just want a short break, I usually play guitar. I also read, watch a little TV and spend a lot of time at AH.

I have no idea what I'm going to write. I'm my characters first reader.

Do you put more time into writing or revising?
Learning to put more into editing.

Do you work better under pressure of a deadline?
Yes, it gives me no choice but to write.

How long do you usually work on your writing in one sitting?
It varys a great deal depending on family/work/life/studying responsibilities.

Do you prefer to work on your writing over a number of days, weeks or months?
I write all the time, no specific time frame.

Do you write for your audience or yourself?
I write because I'm told to. lol

What manner of porn do you write?
Apparently stuff that works.

How do you procrastinate?
By answering threads like this. ;)

How do you procrastinate?

1. Both, though I only very rarely outline. I hate to outline.

2. More time into writing; I usually have a pretty clean first draft.

3. Maybe not better, but certainly harder.

4. My usual schedule is to write in 3-4 hour stretches.

5. Depends on the project. A full-length novel takes months, but I've done complete short stories in an afternoon.

6. Mostly for me, though I have done some sequels that my heart wasn't fully into because my readers demanded it.

7. I prefer to write slightly nasty stuff with an edge, but not really hardcore. My characters tend to either be, or become, kind of creepy and insane.

8. Minesweeper and Solitaire. Damn them! Damn them both!

I love winging it for fun, but I always go back and make a real story of it later. So it's both, in the opposite order you have it here.

Do you put more time into writing or revising?
It really depends. Until I sent one to an EDiToR on the editor list here,
I would have said revising, but the one I wrote after that was more conscious of the form they want here, and I wrote it to fit that. Not much revision was needed.

So I suppose I ought to know what I want more often. But where's the fun?

Do you work better under pressure of a deadline?
I sleep less. For sure.

How long do you usually work on your writing in one sitting?
until I think I gotta sleep-- if I go to work on two hours again I'll fall down and snore alll over the desk...

Do you prefer to work on your writing over a number of days, weeks or months?
My best one took months, but they won't touch that here, the main cat is too young. The two I did for here took only a couple weeks apiece but I didn't get sleep hardly at all.

Do you write for your audience or yourself?
What audience? Nobody who's read them much says a thing. Once in a while they buy one, but even then I get a check, not feedback. If they won't talk they ain't being any kind of audience. I'm hoping you fellows at least will talk.

What manner of porn do you write?
Ahh. I tried a real wanker last time, but generally it's a sexual situation with which I'm trying to communicate another idea, say, about honesty, or about victimization, or about compassion. Not much good for wanking to, generally, that kind. The wanker was an oddity. I liked it.

How do you procrastinate?
It all comes natural, babe! Easy as rationalization, once you know how!

Just curious. If you don't write, bs is welcome.

All is carefully planned and written top-down. I maintain elaborate side files of locations, characters, event calendar, etc.

Do you put more time into writing or revising?
Revising.

Do you work better under pressure of a deadline?
Yes.

How long do you usually work on your writing in one sitting?
I write from 10am to 6pm Monday to Friday.

Do you prefer to work on your writing over a number of days, weeks or months?
I don't really understand what you want to know. I work on several different things in parallel, if that's what you want to know.

Do you write for your audience or yourself?
For money, primarily.

What manner of porn do you write?
Hardcore BDSM novels.

How do you procrastinate?
By reading my sales figures. It soon gets me back to work.

I only write with the sole purpose of making the reader want to do them selves after reading it, if they don’t I feel that I have failed.

Do you write only when you know what you want to write or make it up as you go?

Prefer knowing, but the opposite has worked well for me also.

Do you put more time into writing or revising?

Probably the writing as I hate reworking something, especially more than once or twice. I have been known often to submit untouched first drafts, and surprisingly they have often been the ones which have won me the best feedback and appreciation. Maybe my mother's motto in life to go with your first thought and not be tempted to change it is more true than I gave her credit for.

Do you work better under pressure of a deadline?

Hate deadlines and pressure, but time and time again I have been proven to work best in that situation. Feels like it is going to kill me but I have produced my best art and writing in that way and no amount of planning seems to improve on the 'under the gun' type approach.

How long do you usually work on your writing in one sitting?

If I am fortunate to be able, it can be all day and half the night. If writing short pieces I prefer to write it in one block. Had the same with university...would write the whole thing in one sitting and hand it in that way. The 2 times I tried the alternative of working piece by piece I almost failed the paper.

Do you prefer to work on your writing over a number of days, weeks or months?

Like short periods of time, though I may come back and change something a couple of years later if it has laid dormant. Once I get to writing larger work it will need months.

Do you write for your audience or yourself?

Has to be a big part of myself in there, or at least a concept I am intrigued by, for it to produce my best. I can write for others, just takes more effort which if I don't see a reason I prefer to be lazy and save myself that pain.

What manner of porn do you write?

Mostly BDSM these days as that is the lifestyle I am living 24/7. Have written equally well in other areas of erotica in the past.

How do you procrastinate?

Painfully and with guilt!! LOL, works sometimes to motivate me out of it, but not always.
