I have to keep those locked away when I'm writing...there's nothing quite so bad for productivity as getting too...stimulated...by my writing.

I use Google Docs for word processing for Lit stories and usually have Dictionary.com/Thesaurus.com open to check spelling and word options. Google and Wikipedia often help for general research.

Writing- Word and Google Docs.
Story mapping/tracking- excel
Editing- word “read aloud”, speechify
Mood setting- Amazon music, I build playlists for really long stories.

I always use notepad because it doesn't push any formatting or weirdness on me. When I tried to use Word I noticed it kept "fixing" my double-quotes and dashes for me .. and sure, that might be "more correct" .. but I like mine better.

You can change that in the Word settings and select or deselect the specific items you want to allow it to mess with

Google docs mostly, Word as a last run through and formatting, and secondary spelling/grammar flagging.
Laptop, tablet, phone depending on where I am. Had to wait at a car checkup for 90 minutes this morning, perfect for a phone read through and edit of the first chapter of my new story.
Google etc. for research, thesaurus etc.

I have not used emacs on any kind of a regular basis in almost 40 years and my fingers still remember a lot of the commands.

A teacher in college wouldn't let us use the mouse in the labs (that was maybe five years ago), he's producing new generations of emacs users

My wife and I have each taught a course where we require students to use vi in labs for at least the first month. Once they were comfortable using it, they could do whatever they wanted. Having vi in your fingers is useful when nothing else is available because almost everything on your server is broken.

vi is a luxury. Your students should be prepared to fix things using only ed.

(Or cat, but we all know cats only break things, not fix them).
