I'm going over to the US this summer and I have a four days that I'm looking for suggestions on what to do (17/7 - 20/7). So any suggestions on what to do for these days?

I'll be in New York the 16th and need to be in Phoenix the 21th so I can fly to pretty much anywhere. Was thinking about going hiking in Tahoe but looking for other options as well. :)

you could always drive cross country and pass by my house to pick me up on the way. :D

Lets see.
2457 miles from New York to Phoenix (not including the road to your house :))
37 hours drive divided on 4days is
9,25 hours of driving each day.

It could work :D

you would prolly be passing right by my house on the way anyway. and i can drive half the time so thats only 5 or so hours for you to drive each day.

True, but 10 hour driving and 8 hours sleeping each day only leaves 6h to stop at interesting places along the way :(

Unless we take turns sleeping in the car while the other one is driving :)

If your really going to drive then I Tahoe might be a stretch. There is really no direct path from there to Phoenix. Plus you would miss maybe seeing the Grand Canyon along the way and that is a noteworthy stop. But if you are intrested in actually driving then I can come up with more then a few places to stop at and see.

If I'm driving I'm not going to Tahoe but directly to Phoenix. I'm considering Grand Canyon.

I've never seen the grand canyon, I'd love to though...

I have to put in a plug for Oregon - it's absolutely gorgeous here. We have Crater Lake, which I hear is just spectacular (I am ashamed to say I've never been - hoping to get there this summer)

Mt Rushmore is sort of interesting, and I think is something I associate with America. Crazy Horse nearby is much more impressive, though.

You might want to consider the Olympic National Park - temperate rainforests are so calming. Or go see the redwood forests in California. Hell, go to Yosemite, or Yellowstone, or the Grand Tetons.

A suggestion I might make is checking out where you can get flights to Phoenix on Southwestern Airlines - they have really cheap flights direct to Arizona, I like them ;)

(Added thought - Seattle is a spiffy city, and I have to put in another plug for the northwestern coast. The Pacific Ocean is gorgeous.)

Can anyone tell me if there is anything to see beetween Chicago and Phoenix? I'm thinking about driving to Chicago and flying to Phoenix from there.

Well I have been in every state but five so I am sure I could find some places worth visiting if I knew what your looking for. If its raw scenery that you want I would say stay to the north and then drop south in Utah, that way to you could see the canyon. But if your tastes run more to seeing attractions then its the south route I would take. You could wander around in Kentucky and visit some horse farm, maybe hit Little Rock and see the Clinton library.

Personally that's not my favorite part of the US. A lot of wheat, a lot of flat stuff... all the interesting stuff to me is on the west or east coast. It's a much more interesting drive from say, Northern Washington to Arizona ;) Yeah yeah yeah I keep babbling about my home area. But it's seriously gorgeous.

Yes all you need to do is drive I 80 and it will run you into Chicago, though be warned to drive 80 through Ohio and Indiana will cost you a few buck as its a toll road and in Chicago there are many of the same tolls.

Why not Oregon has the Columbia River Gorge, I can't say much about stuff off the interstate because that is just about all I drove.

if you ever have the chance, skip I-5 and take 99 - it's a much less crowded and more scenic route.

Definitely prefer raw scenery over attractions. So driving around or hiking would be good. But visiting museums are also high on the list

Why not then fly to Chicago and drive out from there and take a bit of old Rt 66, it used to be called the Mother Road because it went from Chicago to Los Angeles I think. When you it I 70 then you could take that west and see the Arch in St Louis. If you can stand the flatness of Kansas from about Topeka to Denver you then would be right at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Along this route there is a path there is stretch in Utah for 100 miles of nothing but scenery.

I would love to see Oregon but not sure if I will do it on this trip. I'll think about it :)
Have been to Seattle, Yosemite and I worked in San Francisco for three moths a few years ago so been there done that :D

What sort of museums do you like to visit? Chi town has a lot of great ones! The museum of Science and Industry for instance is wonderful!

All kinds of museums more or less.
Right now I'm thinking about driving to Chicago with a detour to the Niagara falls and then fly to Phoenix.
While driving the whole way could be fun I'm not so sure I want to spend that long in a car.

If you go to Niagara, I can highly recommend that you go on "the maid of the mist", and also "journey behind the falls". I've done both, and it's amazing to get up real close to the falls. I have a few pictures from my trip to it here http://kennl.dk/pictures/usa/

There is also the Field Museum and the Art Institute there in Chi town. Oh there are a ton of museums there. I think I even read about a small stained glass museum on Chicago Uni campus. While I was there I didn't have enough time to visit everything I might have liked to.
