What to do in Orlando?

That isn't Disney, too touristy or cost a lot of money??

Anyone?

Gatorland! (if you like zoos with a strong hint of the 1940's. For me it was Nostalgia central)
Orlando Museum of Art
Henry Morse Museum (just for the Tiffany Chapel)
Winter Park's Park Avenue
Renniger's Flea Market and Antique Mall (Mt. Dora, about 30 miles north on 441)
Rock Springs
Lake Eola Park in downtown Orlando

Orlando is my home town :) Also, you can check to see if Recidiva is free -- she's in the south cofner of town.

You can go canoeing in some parts of Orlando, and it's not all that expensive. It's cool, because sometimes you have to push alligators, water snakes and turtles out of the way :D I can find out the name of the place for you if you want.

Daytona Beach is free, too.

Alternatively, you can always go swimming in other people's pools at the dead of night - that was always good for a laugh ;)

They have that Jesus Experience thing, too. I never went, and I have no idea how much it costs... but it's probably quite interesting.

There was also another place... I think it might have been attached to Universal Studios, but it had lots of themed hotels, shops, restaurants, cinemas, bars, and after 6pm (I think) you can get in free. There are also free boat rides for the people staying at the hotels (which lie just across the water). Nobody checks whether you're staying there or not, so you can just queue up and go cruising across the water for an hour or so.

wouldn't the better qustion be who to do in Orlando? ;)

( I must have too much time on my hands, or my brain needs a fresh washing)

LOL! My husband would have something to say about that... ;)

These are great ideas... keep them coming!

*scribbling furiously*
ok, figuratively... really just copying and pasting... lol

Basic places to start searches that you can drill down from:

http://www.fodors.com/miniguides/mgresults.cfm?destination=orlando_disney@112

http://www.frommers.com/destinations/orlando/0022010001.html

http://www.lonelyplanet.com/worldguide/destinations/north-america/usa/orlando

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g34515-Activities-Orlando_Florida.html

These sites usually have a good discussion board that you can either search for tips/trip reports/advice for a specific area or you can post questions directly. Tripadvisor is usually pretty good for up to date consumer reviews of hotels and such. The forums are not always as busy or as reliable as Fodors or Frommers. You can also search for Orlanda's CityBest site ... they list reviews on restaurants, attractions, etc.

Thanks for the links, Rogue.

(that AV is cracking me up!)

Wekiwa is good for canoeing -- rental is cheap. King's Landing is where we used to go. All of that is actually north of Orlando, around Apopka and Rock Springs (which is also part of the Wekiwa but is just for icy cold spring water swimming and innertubing).

The thing is, Orlando is sort of central to everything. In and of itself, there isn't that much beyond a lot of malls, but you can GET to everything interesting within an hour or so. The Space Center is a good, inexpensive way to spend a day, but is about an hour's drive.

New Smyrna is nicer than Daytona beach, by the way. Not as taken over by tourists. Cocoa beach is sort of a homier, poor boy beach. (Not that I would really know -- my memories are old. I haven't been near a beach in YEARS. They are uniformly evil).

I miss living in Orlando. Living in the quickly suburbanizing twigs has gotten on my last nerve.

World's Largest McDonalds is downtown. Seriously.

Kennedy Space Center is about two hours away. Everyone even a little geeky needs to see it.

At the end of October.

And unfortunately, Hurricanes don't know the rules.

Disney Downtown is interesting. The magic shop there is fun.

And Disney Quest, $29 to $35 for the day per person, is some interesting virtual rides, and every video game you can think of. Once you pay to get in, the rest is free. It's an indoor amusement park. Fun.

Wow, I was going to respond with a sarcastic "Leave" to the thread title, for the obvious reasons, but looking at the reponses, I'll pay more attention when a local airline starts offering special deals again. :) :rose:

There are times of the year when "leave" is a smart idea -- pretty much from late May through October. Of course, there's no place quite as beautiful as Central Florida in February...Azalea Park, Leu Gardens, Mead Gardens (all in Orlando) and the older "tourist parks" at Cypress Springs and Silver SPrings (if they ever open again).

Especially if you are sick of brown, white and cold...:)
