Halloween's right around the corner (-ish), and I was looking around for what might be my Halloween av this year, and in browsing images, I started to really creep myself out! So I thought it might be a fun Lounge thread idea, to ask you all what scares you - what gives you the willies, what freaks you out this time of year - or any time of year?

Please note that this is meant to be fairly light-hearted. We all have real fears like disease and bad things happening to our children - let's not talk about those, okay? I'm interested in the irrational, embarrassing, funny, maybe even sexy (except when you're home alone and it's dark and you have to check all the locks six times) creep-outs that we've all experienced at one time or another.

Or every day.

Look - I never make threads. This'll either pass or fail, but here we go. Me first...

In no particular order - and this is definitely not an exhaustive list - here is what SCARES ME:

  • Slenderman
  • people in masks, when they don't say anything, and I can't tell who it is
  • Pyramid Head
  • any creepypasta, but in particular...
  • "Jeff the Killer" - especially in surprise pop-ups (I hate you)
  • any surprise creepy pop-ups
  • when you finish writing a really smutty email and you're not 100% sure that you didn't just send it to your mother-in-law
  • earwigs, when they rain down on you out of a tent that got put away damp
  • ghost photography
  • ghosts caught on video (I don't even believe in ghosts!)
  • post-mortem photography
  • Allison Harvard (would still bang)
  • Christopher Walken (ditto)
  • certain Litsters (ditto...)
  • mirrors in dark rooms
  • my reflection in dark windows
  • ...shut up.

As a bonus, here is my "I got better!" list of what used to scare me.

Like, last week.

  • witches
  • OMG, the flying monkeys in The Wizard of Oz!
  • alien abduction
  • the bad guys in Benji
  • the freezer guy in The Goonies
  • Ouija boards (still wouldn't burn one)
  • romantic commitment - oh hey, are you still reading? :D Then I guess it's your turn!
What scares YOU?

Fun! Although I was about to go to bed before I checked in on here and now I'm not sure if that's happening anytime soon... Thanks, Alice!:heart: A couple of yours are also ones that freak me out. I may reiterate some, but only to add specifics. Also, a lot of the stuff I'm scared of definitely falls into both the "lock the door" and sexy sides of things. Well, here goes, in no particular order...

- Pyramid Head, for sure. I'd rather not elaborate on the complicated nature of that fear, though.
- Earwigs, ugh! Particularly because it floods here and they appear in droves when it's wet.
- The Smiling Man. Augh. Augh. Eeeesh.
- Pazuzu from The Exorcist.
- Return to Oz. I watched it as a kid at a daycare center my mom used to drop me off at when I was sick and she had class. I still watch it occasionally and am now bewildered by its inclusion in their rather extensive video collection.
- Deep, black water.
- Mirrors in general, if my mood is just right.
- Zombies. I still watch/read/play multiple forms of media involving zombies, though. I know, I don't get it either.
- "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" by Tiny Tim.
- Being outside alone during that creepy time of 3 am to 5 am. It used to be thrilling and rebellious, but now I know that ain't nothin' good gonna happen past 3.
- Knives. If I'm in the kitchen with someone that's chopping vegetables or something I'll stay a safe ten feet away, thankyouverymuch.
- Guns. Living in Texas for a brief period was a harrowing experience at times because of this.
- Chaotic sadists. Well, just sadists, really.
- Heights, of any kind. Even those dizzyingly wide shots of NYC streets can make me change the channel.
- Sleepwalkers.
- Possession, that one movie with Sam Neill and Isabelle Adjani.
- Russian mobsters (??). Ruthlessness? Absolute lack of remorse or morality? Who knows why!
- Public speaking when it's a topic that I have absolutely no interest in or it's a graded oration. Yikes.
- Breath play.
- You know, really... basically everything I'm into (autassassinophilia, humiliation, objectification, violence, etc.), although this may be more about a fear of where my mind takes me.
- Misogyny fetishists that aren't kink critical.
- Spam. YUCK.
- Failure.
- Sociopaths.

That's all for now! Gonna just go sit in the corner and hug myself for awhile.

I forgot about water. At night water looks inky black and so vast, it seems endless. The quiet and sound of the water flowing as well as the perception that it is neverending terrifies me. I am actually getting choked up thinking about it. Forget about crossing a really long bridge at night over water. I had to do that one time and I almost had a panic attack, have never done that again.

Dementia, or being useless in some way. I've made a Living Will, which may seem excessive for a healthy man of 36, but I can't bear the idea of clinging on pathetically to a diminished life.

It used to be spiders and flying, too, but I now quite like the latter and can at least deal with the former now, though I'm still no fan.

Similar to Def - that lack of capability or control over what one can do. I think that would be a scary and confronting thing.

I hate to have a short reply as seeing any post or thread from Alice is great, but there are not many things I'm scared of.

Call me silly.

Or maybe call me Australian.

Both are probably the same.

The Purge
Someone knocking on the door at night.
Failing
Parking garages
Heights
Public speaking
Haunted houses and the people that work at them that get off on jumping out at you and scaring you to death.
Insects and other creatures that jump - crickets, frogs, grasshoppers.
Movies with kids in them that are creepy/evil/possessed.
Creepy dolls
Stalker-ish type people.

Hmm. Things that scare me.

Baked potatoes.
Anything from Silent Hill.
Men in balaclavas.
Spiders with long legs.
Ghost photographs/footage/sounds.
The dark (but only after playing scary video games or watching movies)
Not Ruffles.
Phone calls from anonymous numbers.
PMs from annoying people.
PMs from illiterate people.
Whoever invented PMs.
Slow moving animals kinda freak me out.
Slenderman.
Kidnapping.
Sex. Sometimes.
Ouija boards.
Salad Fingers. Fuck you, dude. Fuck you.
Children's TV.
COURAGE THE COWARDLY DOG. NO. JUST NO.
The consistency of couscous.

:D

OOOooo this is fun looking!

-BEES, if there's one buzzing around my hair stands on end if they start gathering I've got to bail

-getting locked out in a towel by my roommate
-my dogs stealing my towel
-any accidental exposure (a drawn-out childhood experience)
-Freddy Kruger
-Windy tree shadows (you know shadows from the moonlight pouring through your window that look like something but you're not sure what and they're moving:eek:
-black dogs long story

I can NOT watch any scary movie out in public; I can't even handle the previews! If I watch a scary movie, it has to be during the day in my own house, sitting where no one can be behind me. I hate scary movies!

Dracula.
Al other vampires.
Demons.
Witches.
Birds in big flocks.
A single crow flying over me in the dark of the night.
Yelping and jumping little dogs.

Ok, here goes nothing.

grins

I'm another one for whom the line between 'holy crap, I'm so scared I may soil myself' and 'I'm actually rather turned on' is very vague, if indeed a line at all. Some of these are definitely just creepy but a fair few...

There's also a ton more, I'm sure but...for starters...

  • Heights - never been a fan
  • Spiders - they have too many legs and I grew up around ones that could kill you so I guess the fear is slightly justified
  • Stupid people
  • Falling over/down - This one I don't understand but it goes kinda hand in hand with the next one....
  • Breaking/Losing teeth - I had braces for years so I don't know if this is a factor but the idea of breaking or losing teeth makes me...ugh, just thinking about it is awful!
  • Noises in the dark - Noises you don't know. Like, you're out walking the dog at night and you hear a sound. Might be your dog. Or a squirrel. Or a psychopath... You just don't know!!
  • Not being good enough/Failing - Yeah, I think we all have this to a degree but figured I'd stick it in the list anyway
  • Being unable to move - definitely scary...and sexy
  • The wheelers in 'Return to Oz'
  • Taxi driver killers/kidnappers/etc. in movies/shows - They just do.
  • Puppets and dolls - Old school marionettes and china dolls. Just. No!
  • New situations - As social as I usually am, new situations and people tend to freak me out a fair bit. Maybe it's because you don't know how people are going to react, where the social boundaries are. It doesn't last long but I'm such a nervous guest to begin with!
  • Feeling like I don't matter/having no choice - Another one that's also a kink to a degree
  • Violence - Bad, very bad...and sometimes good.
  • Malevolent spirits - Not ghosts in general, just the grumpy ones.
  • My mother in law

Forgot one!!

  • Fire - I have love/hate relationship with flames. Maybe it's the witch thing. It excites and terrifies me in equal measures.

I'm so glad people are chiming in with their fears! Thank you!

Only it's awful, too, because I'm reading your lists and going:

"Augh!"

"Augh - shit - yeah, I forgot that one!"

"Augh! There's something I never considered! Great..."

:D But I love it.

I keep thinking of more, throughout my day, but then I forget them when I have time to post.

One that scares me all the time (I really don't believe in ghosts!) is when my son's musical/talking toys suddenly start playing...from across the room...when they haven't been touched in hours.

Another thing that used to scare me when I was a kid? The Count, on Sesame Street.

But in my defense: he used to be creepier!

I do, too! No surprise there, really. Also, the toy thing! Yeeesh! I've also thought of a few more:

- Hiking in a group, or walking back to a campsite in a group at night. Everything's fine until you realize you're the last one in the line, and then you speed up to fall safely back into the middle.
- Walking through a cold spot in a body of water. Fun, but creepy when it's a lake.
- Driving down old gravel roads at night.
- Waking up and realizing the front door wasn't locked.
- When my dogs perk up for no visible reason and growl at stuff only they can hear.

For what it's worth, I don't think anyone could ever forget you - much less replace you. You're one of a kind.

Heights - I'm not sure when this started. I didn't used to be afraid of them. I'd climb up 50 foot trees when I wad a kid. Maybe I've just acquired a healthy respect for the length of time it would take to hit the ground.

Spiders - I try to freak out about them less. I've gotten to turbpoint where I don't scream like a girl. I can even be two feet away from them...but if they surprise me somehow...I might still spaz out a bit. I'm not even sure what it is. I know they really won't hurt me. And they keep bugs out of the house...but...they're creepy...

Not having what it takes to help a loved one in an emergency situation. - I have nightmares sometimes where I'm not strong enough, or fast enough, or smart enough to keep someone I love from a painful death.

Being like my mother

I fear the political directions America is going in

I'm thinking there has to be more...but I'm really not afraid of the dark or the things that live there. I'm sure everyone feels a healthy dose of fear in life threatening situations. Like, I'm sure I'd be scared if I was kidnapped. But I don't fear the possibility of it happening. I don't fear violence against me. This thread really did make me sit and think. Very cool :)

Zombies-always give me the heeby jeebies.
Scary movies-some people love them...I hate them. No matter how old I get I can't watch one and have a good night sleep after. My imaginations is just too powerful not to dwell on that feeling of someone or something is there out to get you.
Falling down the stairs.
Hurting my knees again.
Related to above: watching athletes in sports or dancers or figure skaters and thinking how easy it would be to hurt their knees while they're performing.
Not crazy about heights in general either.
Drowning.

Things I am afraid of..

Being buried alive
Climbing... I am such a big baby when it comes to this. Heights don't scare me unless I have to climb a rock face or something.
The stupid bugs from Starship Troopers... This is more of an old fear though.
Hearing strange noises in the house when I am alone.
Failing my schooling
Canes
Single Tail Bull Whips
The Rubber Paddle in the toy box... trust me it is worse than it sounds.
Snakes
Losing my functional abilities and getting really old
Breaking bones
Making medication errors

Scary movies scare me. They work real well on me, I hate them. Won't watch them. You go from bored shitless to jumping a mile out of your seat. No thanks. I'll dodge heavy traffic on a bicycle. I'll go 220 kph on a motorcycle. I like spiders. They are our friends but I do not like horror flicks. Zombies are ok. No Micheals, Freddys or Jasons.

Heights...
Spiders and other bugs...
Being out alone at night...
Loosing the people I love...

and thinking about what scares me, because it shows that I am scared of a lot. ;)

Slice and dice horror flicks.
Clowns. Just creepy. *shudder*
Spiders and snakes. Ugh. No.
Heights.
Halloween corn mazes and houses. (I squeeze in between people and make myself as little as possible)
Porcelain dolls.
Dying.
