What music do you write to?

So what gets your creative juices flowing? I find I like to listen to a little bit of soft music in the background while I write. Not to loud or too heavy as I find it dictracting. At the moment I am listening to one of my most favourite CDs Mermaid Aveneue by Billy Bragg and Wilco. Lets hear what the rest of you are listening to...

Since I got a digital cable box with my cable modem package, I usually find something that suits the story I'm writing for on their 'satellite radio' type channels and put it on in the background (or maybe one of the many MTV/ VH1 variations [no commercials there, either!]). Everything from hardcore rock and rap to christian and opera. For instance, for the married couple's bedroom scene in jakelyon's 'The E-mail' I had on a jazz channel like they did. For the 'Choices' porn shop, I probably had on something more 'alternative' for 'Kellie'.

Generally, I listen to classical music, or non vocal soundtracks while writing. As of late, I've been listen to the soundtrack from "You Only live Twice" by composer John Barry.

background sounds

I hate to say this... but I haven't written anything in a long time. But... I can tell you what music I listen to while online surfing. Usually I have the TV going in the background. VH1 is usually the channel, but in the evenings I like TBS, they play a lot of Seinfeld and Everybody loves Raymond.

Mostly I write late at night in a shared space, so it hasn't occurred to me to put on music. Some of my threads certainly describe music as part of the story.

I imagine for writing something soothing and not too distracting. Maybe Loreena McKennitt. My computer's music playlist is a little skewed for that -- surf guitar, tango, Cake, and Dr. John, if you can believe it. Need to mix in some more (less?) variety.

Perhaps someone might suggest a singer that would be along the same lines as the fictional "Billy Royce" from When The Cat's Away. Though maybe I haven't filled in enough details -- he has an enthusiastic following among college-age types, but strikes a chord with some of their swinging parents as well; his latest tour and album inspire making out and more on the part of the listeners.

Perhaps Billy Royce is a lighter-hearted version of Terry Moore's "Griffin Silver" from Strangers In Paradise. (Feel free to chime in, Ooohkitty, if you're connected again).

Sorry if I'm rambling a bit. Right now I'm listening to the traffic outside. Road sounds a little wet.

There's a copy of Mermaid Avenue around here somewhere, but I guess I'll start out with Don Reeve's Spirit Wild. Gotta love those guitar virtuosos...

Now where did I put my headphones?

I love music but just can't listen to it when posting. I have a very short attention span.

What I usually do is play the music on my PC while reading, checking out these boards etc., but then switch it off when I start to type. Right now i'm listening to Carey by Joni Mitchell, but I have everything on my PC from Johnny Cash to the the Divine Comedy.

Creative music

ENIGMA always seems to do it for me! Something about those droning rhythms pounding in the background to get the juices flowing. Seems to make the mind flow a little better.

I love enigma and ambient music -- stuff without words usually. Phillip Glass works great. :) And hi! Just discovered this place!

Welcome to Chyoo-land, Malcah. You arrive in interesting times.

SparkyMan -- thanks for reminding me about Enigma. I had a housemate introduce me a few years ago.

I can write to anything; I have over 1000 songs on my hard drive (mostly metal) so I'm never at a lack for a selection.

Perhaps you can recommend something good and hard for a fellow metal listener?

Is everyone playing Enigma now?

Seems like I reminded people of an old treasure! Glad I could resurrect one of my favorites :D

That and The Crystal Method -- Legion of Boom, Tweekend and Vegas -- three great albums!

Some of my faves are Disturbed, Saliva, Cold, Sevendust, Three Days Grace, and Drowning Pool.
