What makes you leave feedback?

I was just wondering what makes you take the time to actually send feedback (via email or the story feedback forum) or leave PCs. Is it the author's self-promotion, how strongly you felt about the story, your knowledge of the author?

For me, first I figure that if I'm going to whine and beg for feedback, it's only right that I should give some. As for which stories I give feedback to, it depends on several things. First, if I really hated it, I won't comment. There needs to be at least something I like for me to say anything. Then, I look at the story feedback forum and see if anything promoted there catches my eye. If I notice that the author has responded to previous feedback in a hostile manner, I won't even read it because I feel they are looking for praise only and won't even consider any suggestions I may have.

So enough of my own rambling. What do you think?

What makes me leave feedback is I read the story all the way through and I liked it.

I agree with rgraham666, though I'm starting to respond to requests in the story feedback forum.

I never leave feedback...ever...on any story...in any forum... :D

I'm sure you have a good reason, but why not? Or do you do it with pm's.

She was kidding. Jenny leaves extensive feedback. And she'll even clarify what she meant. Actually she's partly to blame for my continuing to write: she keeps encouraging me and offering advice.

One of two things will always get my feedback or at least a comment at the end of the story:

1) If the story had great potential and somehow blew it. Blew it means it did something that made me stop reading--or made me disappointed by the time I got to the end. Like you, if the story is no good at all, I won't bother. But if it was going well and dropped the ball, then I send feedback to ask the author if they won't give it another stab. Because I feel like I've read a rough draft, and I'd love to read the final draft.

I always tell them what I liked, as well as why the story didn't satisfy.

2) If the story did *something* really good. It doesn't have to be a brilliant story as a whole, but it did something nice along the way that got me nodding my head, I'll leave a comment or drop the author a line or both. A thematic undercurrent, going a step beyond just good characters or story, always catches my eye and my approval. It makes me feel like the author went the extra mile for their reader.

I can't do feedback on every single story I read, on account of how sometimes after a really big orgasm you just want to roll over and go to sleep :D But I will vote!

but when I do, it will be because the writing really strikes me- I go for style- or because the action was incredibly hot. If I remember in the morning.

If the writer asks for feedback, and if my thoughts aren't 99% good, I'll send it in a email, and hope that I don't get fuh-lamed for it.

A story that touches some part of me.....whether it be humour, romance, sensitivity........if it leaves me wanting to read more by the same writer, then I will leave a comment......and also read more.

If I'm in love with a piece of writing, I'll let the author know in an e-mail

I have to have particularly liked something or had something touch me in some way. Or sometimes I'm just trying to be supportive. I do vote on more far more than I comment on. Constructive criticism I send in an e-mail.

I hardly ever vote, and I'm not entirely sure I ever left a comment. One time I one-bombed a story that desrerved it, unfortunately it was probably swept away.

Do you ever email feedback?

I don't read at Lit nearly as much as I once did...but mostly I give feedback because it's been asked for...

otherwise, something has to make a strong impact on me, negative or positive. And like others have said, I leave negative thoughts for email or PM, mostly.

I always vote, and no...I don't always vote 5.

Yes, now I remember. I emailed daniellesadvisor once about how two of his story lines were converging on each other, and complimented him on it.

I have more questions for you guys (it's called avoiding the work on my desk). Do you expect or ask for feedback? If you don't give feedback, do you still expect others to give you some, or are you not looking for feedback? Finally, what kind of feedback do you like?

I don't leave an afterword begging for feedback, and maybe I should. I get adoring feedback on some of my stories, which certainly feeds my ego- but there are others that don't get much, and those are probably the ones that could use critique...

I had a guy email me once. he said that he'd read a story of mine and loved it, and he would vote and leave feedback on it if I returned the favor.
I wrote him back that I would read his stories, and that I judge according to writing ability- that I would vote higher than 4.5, if I thought it was good, or else not vote at all.

I must have phrased my intent wrong, because he got all huffy about it and said "Well forget it then."

I leave feedback if it's well written AND has a good story line.

If either of those elements are missing, I don't leave feedback.

I don't leave negative feedback or bad votes on any story. Different people have different tastes. If it's not to my tastes, I simply move on.

I don't expect or ask for feedback, but I certainly like it--especially when it's enthuiastic and positive :D I want to know that I gave readers a good read, and I like to know if I made some embarassing error (so I can fix it...), and I'll take constructive criticism, absolutely, because I can always do better.

I sometimes ask...I always want. And I adore negative feedback if it actually speaks to the story...

on the other hand, if someone wants to tear down my group sex story because the couple isn't monogamous, don't bother...

my favorite was the one I got about something being so utterly unbelievable that it knocked them right out of the story...and it was about a piece that I pulled right out of memory and is completely and totally true. :D

it has touched me in some way... as to asking or expecting i neither ask nor expect though i do appreciate

I will give feedback via email if I really like the story or to encourage an author. There have only been two occasions that I have left feedback or comments in the form of PCs using the name Misty_Morning or any of my alts. I regret one incident and wish I had left the comment anon. The other incident occured in January. I noticed that one of my favorite authors writing style had suddenly changed and I thought that something was wrong. So I left a PC as a sign of support. Something was wrong, and we all found out that she died last week.
