Origin: Washington state
Destination: Asmara, Eritrea
Attraction: Ubiquitous minefields

Beautiful country, friendly citizens. Asmara, the capital city, is at about 7000 feet, making it quite a nice temperature. If you really like the heat, though, you can make the tortuously twisted two hour drive to Massawa on the Red Sea, and enjoy one of the lowest and hottest points on earth.
Watch for troupes of Baboons, and mines and unexploded ordinance left from their recent wars with Ethiopia.

Point of Origin: Denver, Colorado
Destination: Kalapana, Hawai'i (Big Island)
Attraction: Punalu'u Black Sand Beach

Punalu'u isn't in Kalapana, but it's just down the coast from where Kaimu Black Sand Beach used to be before being covered by lava in May 1990, and the picture is almost identical to the the one I have of Kaimu (no scanner, sorry, so I had to find a pic online). The village of Kalapana isn't there anymore either, at least for now. There are still too many hot spots for the villagers to rebuild. Kaimu was just a five minute walk from our property in Kalapana. The site of Kalapana is just south of Pahoa on the Hilo side of the island.

Here's a small pic of Kaimu Black Sand beach:
Kaimu Black Sand Beach at Kalapana

I used to dream of getting married on Kaimu right at dusk followed by a full luau and all my sisters and cousins dancing the hula and fire dances *sighs*

(edited to fix url)

Mike if you ever get here look me up and I can show you better caves than the lost world. I used to work in that area and was part of the team that did the mapping in the caves. It was awesome. Me and a few navy divers doing the underwater surveying. The best caves are on private property but I can get you in there as long as you aren't afraid of a bit of a hike and a bit of rope work.

Wolfie,

Next holiday in NZ will be in 2004. The rope work really doesnt worry me now. I had a fear of heights, but the rapell into lost world cured me.

I will definatly make contact when Im going over there I love caves.

I have never been out of North America. So, as pathetic as this may sound, my best vacation was in Kennebunkport Maine. It was so aaawsome and there were shaaarks in the waaater.

Awhile ago I had this compulsion to go to Peru. I read so many books about Michu Pichu & the rainforest. It was more of a fascination/repulsion. I decided that it would not be as safe as listening to my Panther Dreams cd and pretending to dance around the flames entranced by the drum beat.

I've always wanted to visit Scotland and revisit some of the place I've been to in Europe.

Backpacking through Scandinavia and the Baltic States were definitive highlights. But so is the Tuscany everytime we go there . I couldn't possibly choose one. :)

I lived in England for several years as a child!
Would love to go back, and enjoy all the things I thought were so boring as a kid!

My favorite place in right in my own state actually...I love Duluth, MN..I would go there before anywhere else. Last time there I found the best place to just stand and stare out over Lake Superior and dream. I can't wait to get there again.

I'm a beach bunny at heart so my favourite holiday destination would have to be Stradbroke Island - ok I know its not exactly an exotic location being only a short distance from me...but it is beautiful, peaceful and invigorating.
Every xmas we pack the kids and head to 'Straddie' for 4 weeks holiday.
Aren't the beaches divine?

Flinders Beah on Stradbroke Island - also good for fishing!

Some of my favourite memories are from Amity Point on Stradbroke Island.

If you don't like salt water there are heaps of inland freshwater lakes too.

Oh, and I forgot the other trip I've always wanted to do: a cruise up the coast to Alaska with a tour of Denali, a fishing excursion, and a stop at the McNeil River Sanctuary to take pics of grizzly bears.

It is also known as Shell Island because of all the seashells that roll onto the beach. White sand beaches, warm Gulf of Mexico waters, wildlife areas, collecting seashells, it was great. Some of the people are loopy about the seashells though. My wife and I went out one morning at first light, like 6 a.m. It was still kinda dark out, and there were already a lot of people collecting. One woman went out at 4 a.m.

Maybe she sells seashells...

Sorry, I had to do it :/
