What is Writing?

Off the top of my head, I'd say it is the recording of utterances on to paper (or some similar medium) using symbols which allow the exact utterance to be retrieved by others without the presence of or intervention by its originator.

What is writing?

Well, it's the process of stringing together clusters of visual symbols representing sonic symbols into new visual symbols representing both sonic and metaphorical symbols though a filter of cultural connotations and common association denominators and still manage to communicate a message to the one doing the reading.

What is reading?

Well...

1) To form (letters, words, or symbols) on a surface such as paper with an instrument such as a pen.
2) To spell: How do you write your name?
3) To form (letters or words) in cursive style.
4) To compose and set down, especially in literary or musical form: write a poem; write a prelude.
5) To draw up in legal form; draft: write a will.
6) To fill in or cover with writing: write a check; wrote five pages in an hour.
7) To express in writing; set down: write one's thoughts.
8) To communicate by correspondence: wrote that she was planning to visit.
9) To underwrite, as an insurance policy.
10) To indicate; mark: “Utter dejection was written on every face” (Winston S. Churchill).
11) To ordain or prophesy: It was written that the empire would fall.
Computer Science. To transfer or copy (information) from memory to a storage device or output device.

I personally like to 'ordain' or 'prophesy'.
sincerely,
elsol

I challenge you to come up with a definition.

Well, if you must know

It is simply the cultural code of enunciation.

Now, narrative is a whole different beast.

Writing, to me, is taking small vignettes of life and transposing them into words to motivate others to do likewise. Well, not so much to write but to be aware of the world around them and notice the things we usually miss.

It's story telling.
Did you just write that?

Never mind me, I'm in semantic philosohy mode. I blame coffee.

Have you been talking to my professors? Or are you just a natural Nietzsche freak? :)

Writing is transcribing a language in order to communicate thoughts or ideas for the purpose of informing or entertaining a reader or for the purpose of organization of thoughts in a manner more concise than memory alone.

I said it much more succinctly. ;) Albeit, writing has nada to do with entertaining, and most certainly has nothing to do with a reader. Writing stripped and, in true form, really has nothing to do with anything, but the writer. :rose:

Damnit. Why do you have to be right, Charley?

Fuckin' Hell...it's a good thing there wasn't a bet riding on this one....

What is not what it can do. (I just wish I had the guts to flirt with Charlie but I can never understand anything she says)

But that's part of the attraction, innit?
