I have often heard of opinions, stance etc., being referred to as unAmerican .

What is this?

Is it when some person or body takes a stance against American government policy?

Is it just a minority view?

When you have a principle of free speech embodied in your Constitution can anyone really say something that is unAmerican?

I am not griping against the USa, I would genuinely like to know what you view as unAmerican and why.

in general, someone saying something is unamerican is unamerican. It is also arrogant. With the insight that comes with speaking off the top of my head I suppose that an attack on the United States is unamerican. That attack includes political attacks that seek to limit our freedoms. I always get suspicious when I hear a politician use the term unamerican. I feel as though I am in a crowd of thieves when I hear that one.

a can of worms

methinks you are opening a real can of worms.............

It used to mean Communist. Or Jewish and successful. That was in the good old days of MacCarthyism (sp.?). Now it seems to be a throwaway terms meaninging 'bad'.

Of course, the only way to really be un American is to not be in America, as illustrated by Bindii. But when people are seriously using this term, their mental compasses are not pointing due Real.
