What is the reason for some stories being read in the millions when many HOF stories are only ~500K reads.

If I spent half as much time writing as some do thinking about beta lists, all time favorites, popular categories, statistics, etc., I’d have written a masterpiece by now.

It only takes five minutes to write a post, fifty hours to write a story. It's not a comparable pastime.

Maybe that did imply incest? Was Dr. Evil's mom ever mentioned? At one point he's got something going with Frau Farbissina, although she also admits to an affair with Una Brau. It's hard to keep everything straight from all that because it was a while ago. By the way, farbissina in Yiddish means, embittered, sullen, mean. You may have meant it that way, but it is a good point. If some here worried more about their next story than counting every vote/view/stat and creating new formulas to figure out even more metrics well then....this forum might actually be more about writing.

Makes sense for a variety of reasons.

This is procrastination central for many people. But beyond that when you're here you're affected by other people's ideas, processes and priorities. Most importantly its the social media trait of bringing you down to their level. If others here aren't writing, or think it should only be done a certain way they will press that on others and you become an outsider for not doing it their way.

My ex father in law had this weird expression that if you lay around long enough in the dirt you'll end up like the rest of the turnips.

I wouldn't really call it much of a protection, to be honest. It is more of a façade that keeps some minimal level of contentment while failing to address all the real problems that we face here. Sometimes this tactic requires a show of power, thus all the banning of forum users and deleting/closing of topics. Lit forum is the place where the least amount of damage can be done, where everyone can be put on ignore, and where every post can be reported and moderated, yet it is clearly the focus of attention lately while story-side Lit, where real problems lie, is being ignored completely. This place is almost like a small country

It seems to me some stories are simple outliers in readership.

Even the extremely well known February Sucks is only like 170K after 3 years yet I saw one story yesterday at 10+ million.

You do know reads are just clicks on the story. So, maybe an author just sits around all day clicking on his current story a million times.
