Ok, here goes. I was thinking (always dangerous), why not a thread on the most erotic non-X rated films? There are some from the 40's that dripped sexual tension. (I am especially fond of Barbara Stanwyck in noir films like Lady of Burlesque from Gypsy Rose Lee's G-String Murders).

And of course there's From Here to Eternity.

There are the standard answers like 9 1/2 Weeks and the Zalman King films like Wild Orchid

Which film got you all hot and sweaty?

I do not think x rated films in general are erotic with some notable exceptions such as last tango in paris. Generally they are boring and repeditive. I think Body Heat was very erotic. Bound was very hot and got me very hot and bothered.

Note that these days Last Tango in Paris is rated R for all but two minutes for which it gets an NC-17 rating. Therefore your general comment about X-rated films can stand without exceptions.

I tend to agree by the way, to keep my attention I need to see story. 12-minute BJ's with no more than oo's and ah's and bad sound systems tend to look like closed loops. Here at Lit, even those entries that are no more than a fuck-fest have more story. (which I guess means that none of our stories will ever make it to film because they have too much story for the porn makers and too much sex for hollywood?)

I'd have to say The Lover (1992) directed Jean-Jacques Annaud. Jane March plays a French girl who becomes the mistress of a wealthy Chinese man. Not PC, because she's only fifteen—amongst other things—but very erotic.

I would have to vote for one from my own country, which was erotic, thoughtful, and magical.

”When Night Is Falling” from 1995.

Written & Directed by Patricia Rozema

Starring : Pascale Bussières, Rachael Crawford, and Henry Czerny

MPAA: Rated R for strong sexuality and some language.

I think that Better Than Chocolate is pretty damned erotic...teehee nekkid lesbians teeheehee

In no special order:

Les Amants by Louis Malle with the always erotic Jeanne Moreau

The Age of Innocence by Scorsese (lushly erotic throughout)

Live Flesh by Almadovar (all his work is erotic)

Belle de Jour - Bunuel, Deneuve, YsL and a pair of purple socks!

Man of Flowers by Paul Cox

Black Orpheus by Marcel Camus

Cleopatra by deMille w/Claudette Colbert

Rain w/very young Joan Crawford and Walter Huston

The Fugitive Kind - Magnani and Brando!

The Rose Tattoo - Magnani

Gilda - genuine sex goddess Rita Hawworth

Indochine by Wargnier w/the mature Deneuve

Johnny Guitar by N. Ray w/a butch Joan Crawford and femmey Sterling Hayden

I haven't seen any of those flicks, perd = ( maybe we shoudl have a marathon.

Chicklet, try 'Les Amants' and 'Belle de Jour'. Moreau has the most subtle and intense orgasm in closeup of face, then a closeup of her fist. 'Belle de Jour' is still aesthetically kinky (I think it's 30 or 40 years old, actually saw it when released) and has one of the sexiest French gangsters (he wears the purple socks; I still go quivery when he crosses his legs and they appear).

smart sex wanted

Sorry, have to step in here with a 'major quibble'.

I need intelligence to be turned on, whether it’s in my partner or a work of art (or minimal artistry). If we’re talking film then I need it in any number of basic ways. With re. to some of the works mentioned above (9-1/2 weeks, Wild Orchid, Original Sin), the intelligence quotient is missing either in the script, the actors, directing or plot. So—not erotic for this audience.

DurtGirl going to be crushed to hear this. She probably already has her dress for when she's nominated for her Best Screenplay Oscar.

And what's worse, she has to use it before it starts to smell bad!:(

I'm not a real film buff, and TBH haven't seen any film that I recall being particularly erotic. Having said that, that scene in Matrix Reloaded with that cake is exactly the kind of thing I like to write about - it put my heart in my throat as soon as I realised what was going on (especially viewing her orgasm through matrix code - reminds me of a scene in Rhiana)...

Perdita, I wondered when someone would reclassify 9 1/2 and Wild Orchid (can you believe there is a part 2 to both movies that scrupulously followed the patter of less intelligent sequels?). Seen all but one in your list (yeah those are great aren't they? I do think Crawford was better as 'butch' than as a glamour puss. I'm going to have to rent some of Louis Malle's work.

Pierce, please pass on my apologies - I didn't mean to dis anyone here. Guess now I'll have to find someone in Holly-woody to produce. Is it necessary that they be legit?

Gotta find When Night is Falling. I love this site. You're giving me a good list to watch.

Dangerous Beauty is also on my list - loved it when she deep throated the banana while talking to her clients' wives.

Is it just me, or does Deliciously Naughty's clothes keep moving to the side? Is this a slow motion-picture?

Side question about porn films: so what do they call their awards? Gives a wonder about how Oscar might be put to use.

I have a feeling I just haven't seen enough movies (and here I thought I had seen quite a few!)

Remind me to rent 9 1/2 weeks at some point, I keep hearing it's erotic.
The only ones that spring to my mind are one scene in Basic Instinct (Douglas and his wife), Like water for Chocolate and...???eh, no clue.

I'll get back on this one.

Hey, I couldn't leave this one out of the list:
The Postman Always Rings Twice - both versions:
1946 - Lana Turner and John Garfield
1981 - Jessica Lange and Jack Nicholson

And speaking of Nicholson, how about:
Five Easy Pieces where he gets to play R. Eroica Dupea
Carnal Knowledge: Jonathan Fuerst
Chinatown: Jake Gittes
Terms of Endearment: Garret Breedlove
The Witches of Eastwick: Daryl Van Horne
Ironweed: Francis Phelan
Could you get any better character names to reinforce an image?

ffreak-

I wrote a story about what one wife does with an Oscar shaped statue. It was a lot of fun. :)

The Piano had such a complex seduction, by the time they actually had sex I wanted to scream with them.

The subway scene in Risky Business was incredibly erotic for me. I remember being startled to find me rocking on my heel while I watched.

Eff-eff: You *must* tell me which you haven't seen. If it's *not* the Cox I will marry you (yeah, I presume you're married, or I read it; just an expression). I've met no one who has seen Cox's work or heard of him.

Malle has a beautiful incest story (forget the title and it's mother and son).

D-Beauty I only watched for Venice, I thought it was dopey, esp. given the true-life subject; read Veronica's own book.

Quills, about the Marquis de Sade's stint in the asylum, was darkly erotic in a really, really creepy kind of way.

The vampire flick Innocent Blood contains what I've always thought was one of the sexiest handcuff sex scenes ever.

I would agree with Postman Always rings twice for a hollywood mainstream film.

Not sure if this one is X-rated(probably is) but it is not a porn film. Ai No Corrida (In the Realm of the Senses) is a very graphic japanese film, which tells a true story of a man's affair with a geisha which goes too far in sexual exploration.

Also not sure of the title, but an Andy Warhol short film of a woman lying on a couch. About 10 minutes long, the whole film is a close-up of the womans face. It is not immediately clear what she is doing, but although the facial expressions are subtle it soon becomes very clear.
