This is an email I just received. I don't know if it is true or not but it it is, it asks a good question at the end. What do you think?

Subject: Denzel Washington : Brooks Army Medical Center

Don't know whether you heard about this but Denzel Washington and his
family
visited the troups at Brook Army Medical Center, in San Antonio,Texas
(BAMC) the other day. This is where soldiers that have been evacuated
from
Germany come to be hospitalized in the States, especially burn victims.
They have buildings there called Fisher Houses. The Fisher House is a
hotel
where soldiers' families can stay, for little or no charge, while their
soldier is staying in the hospital. BAMC has quite a few of these
houses on
base but as you can imagine, they are almost completely filled most of
the
time.

While Denzel Washington was visiting BAMC, they gave him a tour of
one of
the Fisher Houses. He asked how much one of them would cost to build.
He
took his check book out and wrote a check for the full amount right
there on
the spot. The soldiers overseas were amazed to hear this story and
want to
get the word out to the American public, because it warmed their hearts
to
hear it.

The question I have is why does Alec Baldwin, Modonna, Sean Penn and
other
Hollywood types make front page news with their anti-everything America
crap
and this doesn't even make page 3 in the Metro section of any newspaper
except the base newspaper in San Antonio

That's an easy one.

Bad news sells newspapers. Anger, terror, hatred; all move papers off the shelves and out of boxes.

And many papers have a political philosophy to support. Playing up the 'bad things' that 'those people' do makes other political philosophies look bad, and by extension makes theirs look good.

I am going to assume that the story is true. The story gives the specific base and enough info to easily check things. I did some searching and find that the military sources say that he made a very substantial donation later instead of wrote a check on the spot. This last seems more likely; not everyone carries a check book with them all the time.

If you want the true story of what is happening in Iraq, Afghaniatan, Guantanamo Bay or even the bases and hospitals serving the US military personnel, read the blogs kept by combat soldiers and military medical personnel. The material is either true or almost immediately challenged by other military personel.

After you get the true story, then read your normal news sources. You will probably note quite a difference.

How 'bout a ritzy Paris store turning Oprah Winfrey away because the were closed? I couldn't believe this was actually a top headline at CNN.com.

Why was it that "the runaway bride" dominated the news for a while? Why has the missing Alabama girl been such a big news item? These are important to the people involved but not to anybody else.

I think this wins the "Most Insensitive Post of the Year."

Congrats.

I don't mean to be insensitive but I can't help wonder. The girl from Alabama disappeared almost three weeks ago and the search for her and the arrests and everything have been featured on the evening news ever since. In that same period of time, dozens of persons have been murdered or have disappeared under mysterious circumstances and we never hear about them. I hope the young lady shows up hale and hardy tomorrow and says she was just shacked up with her new boyfriend but I don't expect it.

"The runaway bride" disappeared one day and that was in the news for a while but then she was found and had left of her own accord. In other words, nothing had actually happened. However, the story hung around for another week even though it was really a non-story.

"The runaway bride" ...QUOTE]

They are both human interest stories.
They feed the "it could happen to you, me or a friend of ours" factor that is part of what makes a good human interest story. It's easy to care about these people and get hooking into their lives and the lives of their familes.

The celeb stories are in their own category. Simply they sell ink and eyeball time. Both equate to places where companies will spend money on advertising.

What is newsworthy depends on the rag/mag/site and who's reading it, or what's on the channel and its target audience.
