what is it with some people and alcohol

went out lastnight for a quiet couple of drinks to help drown my mates sorrows. but he was in a relitavely good mood and the evening was going fine.

then his girlfriend came in and said hello and the next thing i know is im tearing off some stranger because he's threatening to headbutt him

he was fine one min then the alcohol kicks in and its agro all the way.

i have never been in a drunken brawl in my life. if i can manage to not get a temper why cant others

Simply because alcohol affects some people differently. Some get fighting drunk, some get sleepy drunk.

Some even think they are the world's greatest lover.

Some think they are sudenly more handsome/beautiful.

Some think they can safely drive their cars.

All are not in full control of their faculties.

Alcohol is not for all. Alcohol for someone already blue can bring out the worst.

Unfortunately by the time some people realize this, or get told by a well-meaning person, the disease of alcoholism has set in.

If you're a true friend consider talking to him about how he's changes when he drinks. At the very least, next time suggest doing something without drinking.

Dry red wine for me. A pina colada or Bailey's Irish Cream when I want something sweet.

Then I either get raunchy, giggly or just go to sleep.

But I am a little wild at heart and that gets me in trouble.

In spite of the fact that i've studied the subject at LENGTH...

All i can say is that there is no real answer to your question. i spent almost exactly 20 tears as a musician playing in many of the "roughneck" bars in Northern Minnesota.

i have watched people i've known and drunk with for years suddenly, inexplicably do just the kind of Jekyll/Hyde transformation you described. Almost always, the person cannot explain afterward "what the hell was wrong".

If they DO remember, if they are still drunk, they will throw the very same fit. It's bizarre, but it happens every single night to someone.

There are people like you and me to whom it never happens. For 20 years i drank quite heavily, but never came close to such a snap change.

It's a wild card, like most other drugs, and it is, as you say, a danger for "some people".

Not an answer, but it don't think there IS a satisfactory answer yet. The latest medical thought on the subject is that your genetic makeup plays a large role in the phenomenon, but doctors do a LOT of talking.

I cannot get drunk, no matter how much I drink. (Juspar can attest to this.) But when I drink enough to get half of a small buzz, I get giggly. I once lived with a guy (well, three of them), who would turn into a completely different man when he was drunk. He has some tales to tell, too. We had to put a radio collar on his ankle just so that we could find him on the weekends. Once we found him in a field behind WalMart, another with a band's van heading south, another time he was running home (3 miles) with someone's shirt he had ripped off of their back and took off.
