What is Capitalism?

Well, with both of us using it, it has probably become a toxic word, so you don't need any special protections for its usage.

You have NO idea how long I thought about the PC implications before I used it. Or how much thought I've given about it since.

It's all nice and pretty when we debate social systems and try to find our own utopia. But in the end, it'is the cold reality that separates lovely idealistic theories from the nit and grit of day-to day life.

Take my work environment, for instance:

In theory (if you're made of stone):
looks perfect on paper. Big institution, government owned, catered for the majority, no predatory corporations involved. Stable job and salary. So financially and socially: much more justice than what's going on in the US.

In practice (if relating to people interests you a bit more than money) :
Culture of a military institution where everyone is accountable to someone else, the buck stops at that nebulous entity called 'the great public', 'the common good'. Which leads to a bizarre institutional paranoia and culture of fear (of accountability or litigation if something bad happens), of "let me cover my back", "let me pass the buck or complain in order to shift the blame in case I did something wrong". And, the worst of it all, the "crab mentality or tall poppy syndrome".
More than half of my colleagues started with enthusiasm and loved their job in the beginning. Only to find themselves desillusioned and burnt out by such a toxic environment.

I guess that's one of the downsizes of "socialism" and "the majority rules and holds you responsible" for you.

In saying that, I'm not a fan of capitalism either, given the stories that I heard from some of my friends from the US.
I think that both systems suck. And, while you can make a profit in both, they are two different kinds of prisons and soul-destroyers. People feel kept in chains and restricted by money or family responsibilities, and have to put up with all sorts of crap.
