If you look at the online dictionary I was looking at it just says it's fellatio or stimulation of the penis with one's mouth. But I believe a blowjob...to be considered a true blowjob...isn't just that. It has to be "to completion" as it were. Otherwise, it's a job left unfinished and therefore not a true blowjob. (Yes I'm "discussing" this with someone and have come here for some unscientific validation of my own opinion).

Thoughts?

I tend to agree that the term "blowjob" means just that "the complete job". Otherwise it's "getting head", "having your cock sucked", "getting some mouth action", etc. In one case it's a complete sexual act unto itself. In the other it's foreplay.

I think tonguedancer's answer makes sense, but I hadn't been aware that we are assigning technical terms to various gradations of things. I mean, now we need terms for cunnilingus that either results or doesn't result in orgasm. o_O

Also, I'm a little tired of all this cultural crap that emphasizes male orgasm as the "point" of sex. Pr0n likes to play that up, of course, because men are their primary audience, but in real sex, male orgasm is if anything a limiting factor, slowing things down until he can get over his refractory period. So, with that in mind, we actually do need terms for cunnilingus that results or doesn't result in orgasm--if men get to have technical jargon thrown about like that just, women deserve the same (in)dignity.

I thought about adding a little something about cunnilingus but I didn't want to confuse the question I was asking. Come to think of it, I'm not sure why you couldn't refer to cunnilingus to the point of orgasm as a "blowjob" as well

For my part, I wouldn't intentionally exclude anyone from the discussion but the post was meant to be specific to the argument I'm having with someone. As I said above, I don't see why you couldn't connect a lot of the same slang to women. I mean, why is it a "blow" job and not a "suck" job? With fellatio or cunnilingus you aren't really "blowing" on anything (well...I mean you can but you can do that with either) but you do suck...in fact that's probably more true of cunnilingus than fellatio as (at least as far as I'm concerned) the best fellatio is a matter of sliding the cock in and out of one's mouth...not necessarily sucking. So as far as I'm concerned blowjob can be applied to either in it's wrongness :)

"Giving head" can certainly apply to both and in neither instance is the phrase indicative of orgasm. Nor is "licking twat", "burying face", or "munching carpet". :)

How about cunnilingus for non-orgasmic pussy munching and cunnilingooooohhhhhhhhh for orgasmic pussy munching?

And if you eat her out a bunch of times it's cunnilinguses or cunnilingi.

I would consider my efforts a complete failure if I didn't get him off. Unless, of course, he has other plans.

A blowjob is how I pay for college. :D
That is a good way to pay for college, pay not bad, set your own hours, customer service can get tricky though, not everyone is nice. It has got to be a good referral business though if you are good at what you do. Get a good degree.

I'd just like to get one since I've never had one. Sad but true! :(

The term 'blow job', unlike many sexual slang, is recent, although the etymological root is just as hazy. Stemming from the 1950s, it seems that term 'blow' was a euphemism for 'suck', so in this case, a 'blow job' is actually a 'suck job'.

Furthermore, in the 50s, the word 'blow' was everyday slang for 'speed, faster-than-fast' as was used in close correlation to jets. Military pilots referred to their airplanes as 'blow jobs', because the speed of their jets will 'literally blow you away'. That said, sexual slang is often derived from military or naval expressions, so to be blown away quickly became a euphemism for receiving oral sex.

Now, some scholars (yeah, I kid you not. There are scholars of sexual euphemisms) think that 'blow job' stems from a 'blow off' job, which was used among prostitutes for oral sex. A prostitute would fellate a customer in order to help him 'blow off some steam'. There is sufficient evidence to suggest that by the late 1930s, a prostitute would offer a client the service of a 'blow off job' by asking if he needed to be 'blown', in other words - to release some steam.

By the 1960s, the term 'blow job' for oral sex was used among college men, prostitutes and printed porn. However, the word 'blow job' was solidly equated with 'oral sex' with Andy Warhol's film Blow Job in 1964, which contained a number of explicit scenes, more specifically it depicts an actor's face as he is receiving, yup, you guessed it, a blow job from an unseen partner.

So... that's the history of why it's called a blow job, as 'blow' was originally 'suck'.

Did I mention I love my job? :D

Thanks FB! I have learned something new today. Although not something that can be discussed at the dinner table tonight (young ears around), I am gonna share this with Mrs. E later tonight.

Maybe over some wine. ;)

Just before I ask her to help me release some steam.

Well...fuck. This means we still have to come up with nomenclature for cunnilingus to orgasm. (not that I don't appreciate your setting me straight on this important issue)

How about lickjob? Or we could just call it C.T.O. I always thought acronyms were fun anyway. Yeah...I like that...

"No honey, don't stop yet. I want CTO..."

Yeah that works...for me anyway.

I think it needs to lead to orgasm to be a blowjob, otherwise it is just foreplay. Same for him going down on me.

Ah lassie, 'tis unfortunate that ye live across the pond in Scotland because it just so happens that I am quite interested in helping such enterprising and ambitious young people work their way to higher educaion. Perhaps I could come and dig up some sod at St Andrews and stop by to discuss my scholarship program with you.

By my definition of a blowjob I've only had one. Sure, had my cock sucked lots of times but I've only ever been brought off once like that.

It looks like I lose the debate I was having though...judging by the poll results so far. I really thought that there would be a far higher ratio in favor of folks that felt that one had to be made to cum for it to be called a blowjob (and not just foreplay as jessicasc1970 concisely states above)

My wife refers to it as "fluffing" when ist just to work me up and "full service" when she sucks me off.

If you have sex and you don't cum, it's still considered "fucking".

This is the same thing. That's why the second option is correct.

Sure, fucking is still fucking, orgasm or not. Just like sucking is still sucking without successfully sucking something out and walking is still walking whether or not you get anywhere. But the word "job" in blowjob, to me, indicates something that has to be completed. Otherwise the "job" isn't finished and is, therefore, not a job. I mean even if one does a "bad job" building your deck its still a completed deck...shabbily done as it may be.

i'm of the opinion that the definition should be based upon the process, not the results and wholeheartedly endorse heyall's view.

you give/receive a handjob, it isn't IMV synonymous with there having been ejaculation.
