What if....solutions

I really think there is a special meaning behind 1's and 2's. I'd like to know.

I get a good bit of feedback, but when after a good number of votes my score drops like a rock, it make me wonder what happened and why.

I got email today from someone who loved the video script. he raved about it, and proudly told me he gave me a four vote.
Which dropped my average score down to 3.50.
The ONLY vote that helps, ever, is a five. And that's what's wrong with this damn system.

A four can never possibly drop an average to 3.50...

It can if someone's given you a one- for whatever reason.
Yesterday, I had five votes at 3.80, now I have six at 3.50

Hmm, looking that it's obvious my math is off, and he must have given me something lower than a four. But I do words better than numbers anyway!

This is definately not unheard of nor unreasonable, imo. Another site, which shall remain nameless, has a 1-10 rating system and if you want to rate below a 5, you must add comments and it cannot be anonymous. That's obviously in place to stop the anon beasts and 1-bombers. Would not a simple system like this help eliminate the trolls who viciously feed off the creativity of others?

Freedom of speech does not equal freedom of anonymity. If you have something horrible to say, then no one is stopping you...just sign here, please. ;)

I feel your pain, Stella. I watch my rating the first day a story is posted. And, it amazes me that after 90 votes and a score of 4.9, two votes can drop me down to 4.78. (or something like that) It's annoying...And, it just seems to take forever for a rating to "recover" after that happens.

And, to sound somewhat defensive and at the risk of ticking off some folks: My stories have "h's." And, I do not think they are illiterate. You're welcome to read them and let me know if you disagree. I will only take it slightly personally if you do. :)

My shtuff is a little more controversial, and hangs onto it's H ratings by the skins of its collective teeth :D
And my votes come slow. So, maybe I get three five votes, and two ones, - hardly anyone gives me middle votes that I can see- I get a rating of 2.42 EVEN THOUGH more people loved it than hated it. And the particular people that hated it, do so because my women don't have big tits
I hear people saying- "well, after your votes get up to 30 or 40, the averages even out" but- those stories seem to have been here since day one, for the most part. It must have been easier to get reads in the old days, when there were fewer stories to sift through. Maybe I'm just chafing at the newbee status.

Get used to it -- especially if you write in multiple categories (which makes it tougher to develop a fan base).

I have a new one that has 1000+ views and 2 whole votes.

My stuff doesn't get many votes at all. Doesn't matter. I put it here to "field test" it, so to speak. Refine, then submit for paid publication.

The paycheck is the ultimate non-stick troll armor -- troll shit rolls right the fuck off it.

Well, that's the answer, then.
How do you publish, when (my) work crosses a few categories?

So many Trolls...So few delete keys

That's the thing that's been annoying me the most. The stories that take chances get scored lower. I tried to take lots of chances with my last one, and got such bizarre responses it was amazing (I already started a thread about the 6300 word comment). I like stories when the writer does something different or that might not work for everyone, but their reward is a bunch of 1-bombs from 'Anonymous'.

I agree that the score shouldn't matter, but maybe the idea of having to attach a legit username to a 1 or 2 score isn't so bad (no fake usernames where the person has no stories submitted and doesn't allow email...that's the same thing as annonymous).

Also, I'm still campaigning for a word limit on comments. How is it possible that you can't say how much you hate my story in under 1000 words?

Find a rogue publisher, of course. :)

Torquere is almost exclusively homo-erotic (all flavors). Ellora's Cave seems to "specialize" in BDSM-themes. LooseId (I so love that name) is "different" stuff -- paranormal, high fantasy, homo-erotic. Cobblestone is new, but has potential.

There are MANY more. Check out the list of ePublishers on Piers Anthony's site: http://www.hipiers.com/publishing.html#publishers

It's pretty informative.

Good luck! :rose:

Smiling here...You're very correct. There is next to nothing controversial in my writing. I write love stories. My bf/ex-bf/bf (whatever) calls me the "happy ending girl." And, I am.

Something funny I noticed: I rarely give a vivid physical description of any of my characters. (A side note, the women all seem to have long hair because I do, lol) But, the reader fills in the description. I laugh when I get the emails that talk about my charcter's big tits/cock, etc. I certainly know I have never put a measuring tape to a one of male character's penises. :) As for breasts, I did say one woman had small tits and I implied another was curvy. But, it doesn't seem to matter. People visualize their desire, not mine.

And, if you are "chafing at the newbee status," it's okay. You're not the first, lol.
