What I Really Hate

See, must most of those are stories you edit but did not create. I have great troubles adding to stories I didn't create because I never had a plan in my head before it existed.

I am mostly complaining about the type of people who create story after story where they do an intro, and maybe a couple of branching threads that have no real content and then expect other writers to come in and do their whole story.

Do you know what I really hate? Authors who have created dozens of stories, but none of them have more the 20 threads in them. Usually less then 5 or 10. Why do they keep making new stories and NEVER fleshing out the ones that they already have?

Sometimes I have an idea and I will get it down in a story even though I have not had the time to go back and finish it. I feel it is better to get recorded before I forget what it was. I can't really see what it hurts, its not like there is a limit or something. The beauty of CHYOO is if you don't like it don't read it.

I dislike when the characters change names in between pages esp. when they are written by the same person.

It's usually not the main character but whoever they are with at the time.

Yes, that kind of kills the flow when the protagonist is with Amy and then it's Emily or something like that, and you have to flip back and forth to decide that the writer has lost track of the name.

Back in the old movie studio system there used to be a "Continuity Girl" in charge of that sort of thing -- well, actually to make sure that the characters' clothes, hair, poses, etc. matched up from shot to shot -- but that's supposed to be what the editor is for, to turn Emily back into Amy if needed.

Kwill: you could email the editor from the form on their Chyoo profile page. If said editor is paying attention, they should fix it. (Come to think of it, I could do that when I next notice that problem).

Thanks for your new stories, and for sending an invitation to the Chyoo Forums!

I'm guilty of starting stories and not really doing much to them. I attribute it to a short, but not dysfunctional, attention span.

When I do have a huge block of time to write, I'll generally pick the last story in my list that's been modified and I'll find a hole to fill. Of course, sometimes, I'm just not in the mood for that particular story at that time.

Since we're naming names, Captain Humongus is guilty of the block format writing style as well. I think he/she has some good ideas, but they're so buried in crappy that it's hard to get through to see them.

I just happen to contribute more to other people's than my own. I'm not counting the stories I've adopted as mine.

I agree wholeheartedly. He added to Wrong Way and in fact got to what I was trying to to before me (lost on the way to College) before I got to it.

The first thread I almost had to type over (he kept third person and put it in past tense) The second thread I had to change the tense, his fourth and fifth also tense issues and a couple spelling errors.

But other than that I like the speed of his stories, even if he doesn't do any dialogue whatsoever. He makes a good transition thread writer in that his questions at the end are very wide open.

When My net connection was disconnect.

That's why I write in something else (word processor, google docs, etc) and then copy/paste into the Add a New Thread. Works nicely for those of us who tend to write longer threads.

I am also guilty of writing stories and not adding to them. Most of the time I either don't want to wirte or my mind wanders, but I try to do my best.

As for connections, I tend to use my Nintendo Wii Internet Channel and a Keyboard connected to it; since I don't have access to a PC, most of the time. So I have to type up something within the time limit or its adios hard work.

But I agree with y'all, sometimes it can get frustrating when a person just spits out a lot of crap when you are hoping for a good post.

Darren J also has a problem with spelling and grammar.

Ardunt also has some good ideas, but sometimes they are hard to follow.

I've noticed that. Like in Stranded!, he's got three or four threads that are identical except for the changing of one small detail, like who is doing what to whom. It's pretty clear he's got some good ideas of where he wants to take the story, but still.....a little variety is what makes CHYOO go around.

The good Capitan (hehe) is getting better, I've had to edit less and less of his last couple threads.

I just got some thread contributions to one of my stories which immediately collected exactly enough positive ratings to meet the "auto-approval" bar. For four threads by two authors within a single day, it really looks like collusion to get around editor approval.

I don't like being sidestepped as editor by a new writer when I haven't even had a day to look at their contribution.

The threads are at least OK, though, so I'm not too steamed about it.

Can't you turn that off?

I turned the auto-approve feature down after the fact, but it can't be done retroactively short of reporting the thread and having the mods boot it off. And the threads themselves were fine, just needed a light editing pass.

The auto-approve feature is there in case I'm not able to provide editing for some longer period of time, not so people can get threads approved in an hour with a committee of supporters.

I hate it when stories aren't properly overseen. Someone named "ashley massaro" has added about 40 threads in 2 days to Create-a-Wrestler, and the writing style barely qualifies as coherent.

I hate it when an editor doesn't live up to his responsibilities. I recently added to a story, but the last thread added to that story took two months to be accepted. If my threads take that long to get approved, I'm not sure I'll have any enthusiasm for continuing them by then.

Ardunt strikes again!

An excellent thread that was added to Sibling Road Trip completely breaks continuity with the previous thread. I sent him a message back and hopefully he'll fix it.
