What I Did On My Summer Vacation

Wow. That Aztec dancer looks cool! Love his head-dress thingy.

They were really impressive. They did a fire dance where he was actually holding his inner thigh over flames....and I was close enough to see - it didn't even redden his skin. It's considered a form of prayer.

Story Idea : a park double books and the Pow Wow and the Scottish Games go on at the same time.

Abs has already heard this story, but it was so funny at the time, I have to share it here.

There's a lady there on the rez that's called WalksFar (for the obvious reason).....she's the mother of a friend of mine, an elder. She's a little bitty thing - all of maybe five feet tall, and 95 pounds soaking wet. The day this happened it was really warm out, but she had on a sweatshirt and a ballcap. She has a rather raspy voice, and has a cadence to her voice like the Inuit woman on Northern Exposure.

I was at her house, picking her son up, and she walks up behind the car, and sees my license plate.

"Alabama.....that's a long way. You must be tired."

"Yes, ma'am, it is, but I got here a few days ago, so I'm okay." (I'm just making polite conversation with her - she's a sweet lady)

"I'm thinking about moving, myself. Maybe this Saturday."

"Is it? Where will you be moving to?"

She grins, teeth missing and all, and replies "I'm not going to tell you" before walking off accompanied by the howls of laughter of everyone in the car.

:D What a great story. It sounds like you had a fun time. Thanks for sharing the photos.

Glad you liked it. :D

Everybody there has nicknames...most of my friends I only learned their real names later. (Mine's "bama," of course).

We see this guy called Firefoot at the powwow, and I idly ask K. just why they call him that.

"Haven't you ever noticed how he walks?"

"Well, yeah." (He does walk funny...sort of slings his right foot out sideways with each step)

"It's like he's trying to put that damn fire out."

:D

Outstanding Cloudy,

Great Pics.

I don't see you in there though.

Hoping you're having a better time than the last time I talked with you.

Welcome back, Cloud Warrior! :rose:

thanks :)

Ken: she looked much like she does every day, but I did dance in the intertribals...some of them, anyway.

Fem: second weekend in August next year...be there :D

Awesome pics!

...and the idea about the park overbooking and a Highland Games being scheduled at the same time as a Pow Wow? Hmmmmm......

YES! I'd like that...

but I am overbooked at the moment...maybe after I get a couple things finished. Otherwise I'll have Imp after me with a whip, and not in a good way....

LOL!

Cool dresses. What was the purpose of the dances? I mean, except for today's celebration of togetherness and honoring old traditions. What did the dances mean in the old days?
Were any of them intended to attract members of the opposite (or same, whatpreferencehaveyou) gender? The feathers on the costumes make me think about the way birds fluff up their feathers to show how beautiful they are - a more "in your face" version of how humans dress up for clubbing.

The dances are done for all kinds of reasons...

preparing for a hunt, as a way to give thanks, just as celebration...you name it. The fancy dances are a fairly recent thing, you have to look at the traditional dances (the regalia isn't as colorful) for an idea of the way it really used to be.
