I've submitted a Non-Erotic story about a woman in Bangladesh who gets viciously attacked by a man. I fear I will now get many angry PM's from Bangladeshian men, who yell at me for portraying them in such a bad light.

Then again, any person with more than one brain cell (which rules out rednecks, junkies, neo-nazis, and every politician on this planet) will understand that my story doesn't imply that ALL Bangladeshian men are bad. Only those who do these things.

And I'm willing to include any other nationality where a citizen does something like this.

I am of the 'who cares crowd' as long as there is purpose. As I have said before, I posted a story where I symbolically castrate a male voyeur :) and badgered Laurel to post it on Ex/voyeur. I haven't had any nasty comments, but the score sure as hell came down - and that meant: I was doing my job :)

That's a good way of looking at things. I've received very high votes for my essay on how to fight depression, which I never thought would be more than an average.
I'm not sure yet if that's positive or negative.

"The Color Purple" had everyone up in arms that it was a poor portrayal of black men.
It's still a great movie and book.

You can't please everyone, there will always be a few that doth protest.

Things, bad and good, happen everyday in the world, it's called life, some people just need to get one.

I'm optimimistic and know what a good writer I am. I have nothing to be afraid of. I live with a black guy - who ? USED to be my sub, for example, who liked to have derougatory remarks thrown at him. Ok - sure, it makes him cum.

Can I write all of this into a story? I'm sure I will get hung - but you know? When pushing the boundries, you change things, and I find political correctness . . . never in the bedroom.

I also wrote an abuse story, with a twist . . . since the main character was abused and neglected - hence borderline and fucked up . . . the writing is almost impeccable with another edit, but it touches peoples sore spots . . . 'cuz how many have been abused as a child? How many are afraid of being labelled? The score on that one fluxes . . . depending on whether the person reading has lived with someone like that . . . or is someone like that . . . key words are the key.

Ok carried away now.

Svenska,

There's no way you can totally eliminate the problem. Some folks will get pissed about anything that's not a piece of Polyanna public relations crap.

The only thing I know that might cut down on those responses is including a Bangladeshi male character who is a good guy. Of course, there are times when that type of solution is unworkable.

There are several good Bangladeshi guys in the story. The sad father, the kind doctor, the brother who helps his sister to shop...

Any story you write will piss of somepeople Flicka. I get mail all the time from men who angry about the way I generally portray the male of the species in my stories. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Even Dr. Seuss had detractors ;)

True, true. I've received racistic PM's and feedback in the past.

Now, I don't care much for being PC, it's hurting innocent people's feelings that upsets me.

I have written several stories that pissed off some people in one way or another. I had one story that was about a evil lady and her minions that blackmailed and drugged a wife into being more or less a whore, and since some of the evil lady's minions were black, well, I got a reponse about..."Why are you so down on black people? Are you racist or what?" I guess that only white people can be bad guys then huh?;)

Nearly all good fiction challenges perceptions. Your perp has to come from *somewhere* and it's no one's place to say that any nation does not have its bad guys as well as its good guys.

In order to confront an issue one must first stand up and face it.

Those who throw aimless arguments about how PC it is, surely have something to hide themselves.

Keep writing sweetie.

Just don't pick on white guys, okay? Some of them are terribly sensitive about the way their rights have been eroded.

Well, go ahead and pick on us, just don't forget that everyone has been discriminated against. In the whole racism issue, people seem to forget that we even count.
And what people are saying here is right. You always offend or anger someone, but usually, it's their issues that cause the problem (though now and again, we can push things in the problematic direction a little, too). The truth is, you shouldn't care who you piss off, so long as pissing them off wasn't the point.
Race is too iffy a topic, but it's tough for everyone. As Kermit the Frog once taught us: "It ain't easy being green."
Well, I'm not green, just easy. :p

In one of the chapters of Stupid White Men, Michael Moore points out that every time he's been insulted, harmed, threatened, cheated, etc; it has been by a white man. He argues that considering that, he should actually avoid white men altogether, coz you never know what those weird people are going to do.
He's never had any problem with black men.

I've noticed that whenever Swedish media talks about a crime that has been committed, you can always tell if the perpetrator is white, because then the media will not mention anything about this fact. Not a word. They'll mention height and the way he was dressed, but not a single word about him being white. If he's NOT white, however, they'll make sure to tell people that "the suspect is of foreign origin".

This way, we'll learn to associate crimes with immigrants. I actually stood up and applauded when I heard the police give out the description of the man they were looking for, suspected for murdering Anna Lindh, and they mentioned that the suspect was a Swede. They actually used the word "Swede"!!! As in, "white"!

There still is hope.

Svenskaflicka,

That was a big issue here in the states a few years ago. By now the cops and the media have become pretty good about using the same descriptive categories for everyone.

They've definitely improved, but there is one thing that drives me nuts here. I don't know if it's an issue elsewhere in the country. When describing a suspect in a crime who has not yet been identified the police NEVER just say white or caucasian. The suspect is always, always, always described as "white or a light skinned hispanic." I always love when this is followed by, "with blond hair and blue eyes."

Never mind the fact that the word hispanic actually has no bearing on race. A person of any race can be hispanic. The word has become synonymous with Mexican, at least around here, which is why they add the 'light skinned' ahead of it. So why on earth can't they ever just say the suspect is white? &
