What happened to all of the doom and gloom economic threads?

The plan works better in cities that go up, ours out west spread out for hundreds of square miles in every direction.. You can't build one that will move a significant percentage of the commuting public. Truth is, and liberals hate the truth, is that Californians love their cars and freedom of independent movement that goes with it. The plan has all the earmarks of another ill advised government boondoggle.

Fellow the money someone going to get rich.

Tis sad but true. Still working on Mass Transit isn't a bad thing and perhaps a piece by piece plan is acceptable. Even if it was just for tourists I promise you a train from San Fran to LA to Anahiem to San Diego to Vegas would make it's money rather easily I suspect. I know if Vegas was was a three hour train ride that I slept through not an eight hour car drive I'd be there at least every other month.

How so buying the land not going to be cheap
Building the rail's and buying the trains aren't cheap
How long before it makes a profit?
And ask your self this if it really was a money marker would a private company not already done it?

truth is it only works for a small percentage of the population. The bus system here in San Diego is a good example. We see empty buses running all over town. Total waste of resources. The Shuttle system moves people from some places to other places and I've used it; but if everyone had to use it to get to work, nobody would ever get to work. So you have to ask if the tremendous expenditure of limited public resources is really worth it.

I'd be curious for starters to see how tremendous an expenditure of public resources it both is and has to be. If it's a one time cost of a billion dollars and then low up keep I'm all for it. I got no problem investing in American infrastructure and I'd love for it to be the best bang for our buck. I'm just not gonna cry when I find out some dollars went to waste on something that either didn't perform as planned or was possibly a mistake.

That said.

No argument that California is at best decades away from being able to replace cars with mass transit. Which for starters is why I didn't suggest it. I live in Fontana (Inland Empire or about two hours up the 15 from you depending on where in SD you live) I'd happily drive down to you and park if I could sleep on the way to Vegas and I'd probably head up to San Fran just for shits and giggles if it was an option.

Couple of things. Look at the proposed high speed rail being touted now. The state is broke, taxpayers are strapped, and Brown goes forth with expenditures even though he no funds to pay for it. That in itself is enough in my book to halt the project in its tracks.

Those employees that will man that railroad will be California state unionized employees who we all know will bid up their wages and pensions to unsustainable levels as all of the rest have done to the point of bankruptcy. Government simply has to go on a diet. Fiscal discipliine has to be imposed on the government, period.

All you have to do is look at the original cost estimates for Obama care and the graph I posted in Coach's thread. This is starting out at 4.5 billions and we are already seeing estimates of 68 billion. We need to have some compassion for our children.

This is what I don't understand your state could have economic boom like we do in south Texas drill for gas and oil it's there use it get out of debt put people to work duh.

California dope smoking libs want to return to some mythical pastoral life that never existed. They believe that man and his freedom are the biggest threat to California, so are doing their best to curtail both. They do want to keep a private slave sector to coerce with crushing taxes into financing their non productive lifestyles though. :D

And at some point Texans are going to get pissed at paying for it and become are own nation again

While I think waiting until later would be stupid instead of going full steam ahead the proposed route looks pretty sweet. If Sea World, Disney Land and Vegas were five minute drive (I practically live at the Onatario Airport.) and then a few hours nap I'd go places and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

You're probably right that they'd get their wages up as a union but they really aren't the problem. Fiscal discipline never got anybody out of a recession. It can't. In the long term however we need to start getting wages for everybody back up. The truth of the matter is that the thing that's eating away at America isn't that Prison Guards make 100k a year and get pensions, it's that you and me don't. The sooner we start working on that the sooner we can really get this beast moving.

As for Obamacare I still haven't seen a CBO report claiming we come out of this worse than we headed in. Only that it costs money which everybody knew. Call me crazy but when I'm paying fifty bucks for a service and someone comes up with a way for me to pay forty for it I ignore the man screaming it's gonna cost forty bucks.

TW, I say this out of love. Please escape Texas soon. The rest of us aren't sure if we're giving you back to Mexico, shipping you all out to Iraq as a permanent occupation force or if we're gonna carpet bomb you into the stone age but something will be done and soon.

Have you always lived in Texas? Because I can excuse you for not realizing how desperately awful 50% of the state is if its all youve ever known.
