What happened to all of the doom and gloom economic threads?

Even if it's a distortion by 300%, which it's not, it still shows that the Iraq war has a far greater cost than the stimulus.

Does the chart back out the costs that we'd be paying anyway? For example, we pay the military salary whether they are in Florida or Iraq, so why should that count as a cost of the war?

I would assume the calculators aren't thinking that our military members don't exist outside of deployments.

Actually, military salary does vary depending on deployment. Combat pay, etc..

So it does matter if they're in Florida or Iraq.

By that much?

Speaking to recently discharged miltiary vets. Yes, they certainly made it sound like a pretty heft bump over base pay.

Combat pay, Family seperation allowance, in some cases per-Diem allowances.

Depending on rank combat pay ($225 / month which kicks in for the entire month if even one day is spent in a combat zone out of a month) and seperation allowance ($250 / month) can nearly double the monthly pay of a deployed soldier.

So yes, it does cost more if they are deployed, and it adds up quickly when you're talking about over a hundred thousand troops..

Shit, I didn't even get clean underwear.

Yeah it's kinda a lot. When I went (this was 2003 mind you) I made just over 900 dollars stateside. Just under 2000 in Iraq. It's even more if your married. I can't speak definitively for the Airforce as a Marine but I hear they have it even better than that.

Cus it's a lot of shit rolled up. Damned if I recall all of it but when all is said and done you're paying the little guys ALOT more. I think that it's rather flat though so while I was getting damn near an extra grand, the people making three grand were only making an extra fifteen hundred. But still.

If you can find KRC ask her, she might remember.

Edit: And there are LOTS of sham marriages because of the family severance (and other crap) you get for being married. Not that there aren't a lot of sham marriages just to get off base housing.

It depends but generally just a few hundred dollars more per month. It's more if you're in a war zone such as Afghanistan. So deployment to Korea pays less. Also you get more if you're leaving a family behind.... And you get even more if you're actually under fire.

When I was deployed to Afghanistan we unexpectedly came under fire trying to get to an outpost. I got a whole month of "under-fire pay" for it. It was a ridiculous amount. $250 or something like that, for getting shot at for a few hours.

Deployers get a tax holiday though, which is a bigger deal than deployment pay itself. This of course costs the government more than deployment pay does. But as far the increased costs of troops down range, it's massively more expensive due to the logistics.

You realize that items like "foregone investment returns" applies to ANY government expenditure, including the stimulus?

Or maybe not, you don't seem to get stuff like that.

Why is it that the usual suspects have gone quiet about the Stock market since it's gone up by over 6% in the last 5 days?

waiting for the next dip so they can all scream in unison, "See! Here comes the double dip!"

It's like being on a rollercoaster with a bunch of 10 year olds.

It was better in Iraq where Saddam kept acting dumb. We got that extra pay the entire fucking time I was there.

And then as you mentioned there is the one day counts for a month BS. We were literally fighting over who got to make a delivery to Iraq that was going to leave on like the 28th and return on the 2nd. It would have been like an extra months pay for delivering some guns. Sure we were gaming the system, but it wasn't the Sgts and Cpls playing rock paper scissors who sent in the fix, we just wanted our cut.

You're not making any sense. Again. Still.

The market is still off a thousand points since May. It was down 15% at one point. (And, for your homework, tell us how much it has to go back up to compensate for a 15% drop.)

Are you thinking this would be a good time to celebrate?

Or were you thinking the stock market going up would be a time to express concern?

I'm sure it makes absolutely no sense to you Firespun. After all, it's not getting worse. The end is not near. The world has STILL not shattered around our ears despite the clarion call of the right that it is about to do so at any moment (for how many months now?)

6% is a pretty small move, doofus.

How's the deficit? Unemployment? Job creation? Consumer confidence?

"The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index® which had been on the rise for three consecutive months, declined sharply in June. The Index now stands at 52.9 (1985=100), down from 62.7 in May. The Present Situation Index decreased to 25.5 from 29.8. The Expectations Index declined to 71.2 from 84.6 last month."

They recently stopped the thing where if you're deployed for 1 day of the month you get the whole month of deployment pay. Now it's prorated I think or someything.

My brother's girlfriend is a helicopter pilot in the army and she was saying the exact same thing. People would do their best to delay leaving the deployment just to leacve on the first of the month.

It's pro-rated now so no more fraud, waste, and abuse.
