UH OH: New York Times: Is The Recovery Losing Steam? Was there ever a recovery at all, or was it just a matter of pumping air into a leaky tire?

Once the Fed hikes interest rates again, bye-bye stimulus.

You seem to post here a lot, so are you helping the economy?are you jobless?

Yes, I pay Comcast for internet access. Jobless, no, trying to stay retired, but those silly companies keep calling offering me money.

Overall they piled on the last few months of 2008 when it was clear who was going to win.

"when it was clear who was going to win?"

Oh please. One minute you guys are slobbering over Obama's narrow margin of win by two or three percent when you want to wipe the smug off those damn happy sunshiny Libs and the next it's a crystal-ball-clear view of his presidency from day one of his campaign when you need to attribute the approaching casualties and negatives. Stick to a script.

Those jobs were destined to be lost, regardless who won. The whole shebang was a house of cards built and run by greedy elites with bullshit entitlements and it was coming down no matter what. I don't know how it is where you live, but I saw immediate physical results of the "before and after" in this city. And that was in August of 2008. Shit, even before the big crash, jobs were tight and it was a steady incremental trickle of fails going on.

Just put an ACORN sticker in the window.

It's funny that the people that contribute most to this thread contribute the least to helping the economy and are jobless.

It's like when you throw a party with lots of food and booze all out of your pocket and you invite friends who bring friends of their own that don't know you personally...and they bitch about the food and drink after they've leeched and partied off of your gratis hospitality.

We can rest easy now. The elites got our money and gave themselves big bonuses.

Froth much?

Obama will sure enough take credit when the economy turns up, whether or not he does anything to deserve it. And of course Bush's detractors looked for any angle to criticize the economy when he was prez. (Just like you did a minute ago.) So why can't we have a little fun with it, hmmmm?

Hey, have all the fun you wanna, baby. Nobody said you couldn't. ;) See, there's a personal interpretation of life that helps you sleep at night and then there's the verity of life that other people outside of your world have to deal with. Those who were losing jobs in mid-2008 can tell you all about the truth while you continue channeling Fred Astaire on the spin dancefloor.

If you're so set for Obama to own the disaster, then you best be set to have him own the recovery. You can't have it both ways, you know.

Seriously for a moment, if Washington (congress or the Prez) could create private sector jobs in mass quantities, there would be no recessions. But they can't create them, so we get recessions. They also can't easily destroy jobs.

They can try to influence things indirectly, but most stimulus programs have much more impact on the deficit than on employment.

I do think there is an impact on employers due to laws, actual and potential. If you're thinking about investing to grow your business, you want to know what the laws are going to be like. If you don't know, it's easy to talk yourself into waiting a bit to see what happens.

To add to that, it's my belief if Obama did NOTHING regarding the economy, tax and spend and health reform, we'd be much better off today.
Main Street puts people back to work, not Washington.

Well, exactly.

King Canute got it right. But I don't think it helped him politically.

chances are the economy will recover, to a greater or lesser degree, while obama's in office and while pelosi's the mouth of the house. and yes, sadly, both those fuckers will do nothing BUT take credit for any measureable recovery.

the only real question is whether it would have recovered faster, or more slowly, if they hadn't passed the legislation they did?

the problem i have with obama & the democrats right now is that they're bound and determined to shove health care "reform" down our throats, when a) that will have either no impact on the recovery or a negative impact, and b) popular support is melting faster than the polar ice caps. while legislation like this will seem monumental and congress will spend months patting themselves on their backs about it, more and more it seems like this is more about them than us. many say that health care reform legislation will create no jobs, will add billions to the deficit, and will be a burden on businesses. how that helps people out of work is beyond me.

the green jobs idea is a joke, and fails when scrutinized through economic theory. it was the brainchild of van jones, an attorney with no business background at all, nor any real background in environmental issues prior to 2005 when he jumped on the bandwagon. oh and not for nothing, but this is the same van jones who believes 9/11 was an inside job :-(

hmmmm...

Baer also said, “What is certain is that the irresponsibility of the past put the country on an unsustainable fiscal trajectory.”

“The news today from CBO is clear: The president’s budget will continue to lead our nation into a fiscal catastrophe -- an ever worse one than the president’s own numbers suggest,
