On the other hand, it pays to be friends of Obama...

A Mexican telecom mogul who holds the title of world's richest man, and one of President Obama's top donors are both getting even richer from the U.S. government program that supplies so-called "Obamaphones" to the poor.

Carlos Slim, who has an estimated net worth of $70 billion, owns a controlling stake in TracFone, which makes $10 per phone for each device it provides to poor Americans. The company, whose president and CEO is Frederick “F.J.” Pollak, also makes money from extra minutes and data plans it sells to subscribers who get phones and service through the government's Lifeline program. The program, which began in the mid-1980s, has exploded in the past four years after being expanded from supplying landlines to the poor to providing cellular phones.

The phones came into the national spotlight after a viral video surfaced on YouTube in which a Cleveland, Ohio, woman praised the president, saying he needed to be re-elected because he gives out free phones.

“Everybody in Cleveland, every minority, got an Obama phone. Keep Obama as president. He gave us a phone. He gonna do more,” the woman said in the video.

Slim’s Movil America owns TracFone and recently snapped up service provider Simple Mobile for $100 million. TracFones and Simple Mobile service are huge players in the Lifeline program through the company's “SafeLink Wireless” brand. TracFone had 3.8 million subscribers through the federal program as of late 2011.

Pollak has donated at least $156,500 to Democratic candidates and committees this cycle, including at least $50,000 to the Obama campaign. His wife, Abigail, is a campaign bundler for Obama and has raised more than $632,000 for the president this cycle, and more than $1.5 million since 2007. She has personally contributed more than $200,000 to Democratic candidates and committees since 2008.

The Pollaks hosted Obama at their Miami Beach home in June for a $40,000-per-plate fundraising dinner, and hosted a similar event with Michelle Obama in July 2008. The couple personally donated a combined $66,200 to Obama’s re-election effort that year.

Wow, who would have ever thought a candidate would accept money or favors from a rich guy:rolleyes:

A survey released Tuesday by the National Federation of Independent Business shows that owners became more pessimistic during September as employment and sales remained weak. The NFIB’s index of owner optimism fell 0.1 point to 92.8.

You cannot quote them because they tend to support Republicans.

After "You didn't build that," it boggles me that they would continue to do so...

Tend to? Its a conservative lobbying group associated with the Tea Party.

The Government Accountability Institute (GAI) on Wednesday called out the Obama campaign for refusing to address the ownership of the Obama.com domain by a campaign bundler who lives and has business interests in China. GAI also alleged that the Obama campaign has not fully addressed its weak online security measures to prevent fraudulent or foreign campaign donations.

GAI President Peter Schweizer said GAI was “troubled by the fact that the Obama campaign has nothing to say about one of the main concerns we detailed in our report: the mysterious Obama.com redirect website anonymously owned by China-based campaign bundler Robert Roche.”

“Robert Roche has an unusually close relationship with the Chinese government, to whom he is dependent for the operation of his Chinese-based company, Acorn International,” Schweizer said. “At the same time, he owns this redirect website which sends international web traffic to a contribution page of the president’s campaign.”

The Chinese government has a history of trying influence American elections through campaign contributions, and Roche is not a random figure. He was seated at the head table of the China State Dinner in 2011.

Immediately after the progressive magazine Newsweek published a story, based on a nine-month GAI investigation of how easily foreigners can illicitly donate to President Barack Obama’s campaign due to lax online security measures, the Obama campaign responded with a purported “fact-check” that tried to dismiss the report as a partisan attack on the Obama campaign.

All sorts of friends of Obama...

Wonder how much of it is Libyan al Qaeda?

OCT 11: Claims for unemployment benefits plunge 30,000

WASHINGTON (AP) — The number of Americans seeking unemployment aid plummeted to 339,000 last week, the lowest level in more than four years.

The sharp drop, a shocker to analysts and investors, offered a hopeful sign that the job market could be picking up.

The Labor Department says weekly applications fell by 30,000 to the lowest level since February 2008.

The surprisingly positive number is likely to push stock prices higher Thursday amid ongoing concerns about a slowdown in global growth.

No wonder you're embarrassed.

Stocks bounce back strong, recover half of yesterday's losses in first 30 minutes of trading today.

Good news for America

Not so good news for Koaladear.

Germany cut it's growth forecast so the market bump is getting a haircut. Still, this is great news. Jobless claims haven't been this low in years.

Vetteman will be along in a couple of hours once he sobers up, to inform us that the unemployment numbers must be bogus: after all, his idol Jack Welch has quit not one but TWO jobs recently.

Oh, the new tactic. The jobs aren't good enough:rolleyes:

It's not a new tactic. Republicans put "pro-market" policies in place that foster low paying jobs. Then when low paying jobs come about, they immediately blame Democrats for them not paying well. Similarly if minimum wage was abolished they would immediately blame Democrats for there being jobs that start at $0 per hour.
