CHANGE: Roofers union calls for Obamacare’s repeal.

The United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers is reportedly the first union to officially call for repeal of the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare. The health care law is prompting some serious buyer’s remorse in Big Labor, which worked hard on behalf of the administration to pass it.

Roofers union calls for Obamacare’s repeal

“Our Union and its members have supported President Obama and his Administration for both of his terms in office.

But regrettably, our concerns over certain provisions in the ACA have not been addressed, or in some instances, totally ignored. In the rush to achieve its passage, many of the Act’s provisions were not fully conceived, resulting in unintended consequences that are inconsistent with the promise that those who were satisfied with their employer sponsored coverage could keep it.

These provisions jeopardize our multi-employer health plans, have the potential to cause a loss of work for our members, create an unfair bidding advantage for those contractors who do not provide health coverage to their workers, and in the worst case, may cause our members and their families to lose the benefits they currently enjoy as participants in multi-employer health plans.

For decades, our multi-employer health and welfare plans have provided the necessary medical coverage for our members and their families to protect them in times of illness and medical needs. This collaboration between labor and management has been a model of success that should be emulated rather than ignored. I refuse to remain silent, or idly watch as the ACA destroys those protections.

I am therefore calling for repeal or complete reform of the Affordable Care Act to protect our employers, our industry, and our most important asset: our members and their families.”

Conservatives say Obamacare is wrong because it did not have the support of the majority of Americans, only 45% or so. That's called governing against the will of the people.

Now that the provisions of the Toomey-Manchin bill are supported by more than 80% of Americans it turns out that conservatives never gave a rat's ass about what America wants. This is what they call consistent, conservative leadership: flip-flopping your reasoning, perspective, and ethical posture whenever it's convenient.

Hmm, Fox News got the same exact result from their poll.

Fox News poll: Majorities support new gun measures

By Dana Blanton

FoxNews.com

Majorities of American voters favor an array of new gun control proposals, although support for some measures has slipped in the last few months.

A new Fox News poll finds the most popular measure continues to be universal background checks: A large 85-percent majority of voters favors requiring checks on all gun buyers, including at gun shows and private sales. That includes most Democrats (90 percent), Republicans (83 percent) and independents (82 percent), as well as most of those living in a gun-owner household (81 percent).

There is also sizable public support for requiring mental health checks on gun buyers (72 percent) and background checks on ammunition purchases (70 percent).

Gallup Poll: Only 4% Of Americans Think Gun Control Most Important Issue…

MSNBC got the same result:

The broadest support in the poll, however, came for mandatory background checks to purchase firearms at gun shows—88% of Americans polled said they supported that measure.

When almost 90% of America wants something - when Republicans, Democrats, and Independents all come together to overwhelmingly support something, Republicans call it a legitimate use of the filibuster.

WHY OBAMA IS LOSING ON GUNS: “It is a misnomer, then, to blame the ‘gun lobby’ for the difficulty in passing legislation. The red-state Democrats, like most of their Republican colleagues, are reflecting their own constituents’ views.”

Also, support for gun control is weak — it’s a much lower priority to voters than jobs, the economy, etc. Only a priority for the political/journalistic class. Because, you know, they have jobs.

This NIGGER helped fashion it

Top Democrat: Obamacare 'Huge Train Wreck Coming Down'

Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT) warned he sees “a huge train wreck coming down” with the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, known to its critics as Obamacare.

The candid comments came during a Wednesday hearing with Obama’s Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.

“I'm very concerned that not enough is being done so far--very concerned," said Baucus. "Small businesses have no idea what to do, what to expect.”

Baucus appeared frustrated with Sebelius’s unresponsiveness in supplying the senator with information designed to educate and assist citizens with understanding the massively complex healthcare overhaul.

"You need data,” Baucus said to Sebelius. “Do you have any data? You've never given me data. You only give me concepts, frankly.”

Baucus’s comments echo those made last week by Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), one of Obamacare’s chief architects, who called Obamacare “probably the most complex piece of legislation ever passed by the United States Congress.”

MEGAN MCARDLE: Is Labor Turning Against Obamacare?

Some unions are worried that Obamacare is taking away some of the tools they use to control utilization and costs. There’s also a lot of concern that these plans are going to get hit by the “Cadillac Tax” on generous health benefits. The unions are unhappy about this, and not just because health insurance is tax advantaged; they view the generosity of their benefits as both an organizing tool, and a form of social engineering. It takes the same number of hours worked to qualify for health benefits whether you’re a single or a family, and the unions like it that way. They’re fairly socially conservative organizations. And besides, the spouses like the benefits, which keeps ‘em in the union.

Obamacare did very little to accomodate the multi-employer plans. Perhaps that was due to be hashed out in the final bill, but of course, we didn’t get a final bill, because the election of Scott Brown threw everything into chaos. Instead they hastily passed what was basically a draft bill, which had done virtually nothing about the MEPs. The unions supported it anyway, undoubtedly because they were assured by the Obama administration that the problems would be fixed later. From what I understand, they still haven’t been.

This business of rushing bills through without proper hearings, markups, etc. — as was done with ObamaCare, attempted with gun control, and may still be done with the immigration bill — is a formula for bad legislation. It’s also bad politics over the long run, as it undermines trust. Had the gun bill gone through ordinary procedures with plenty of time for people to figure out what it did, it might have gotten more support — but a fair inference is that its supporters thought it would do worse if people knew what was in it.

Ending these rushed-through monster bills would not only give us better legislation, it would be good for our political culture.

You're onboard with it too. Or you can pay the tax.

Except you get fully government-run health insurance called Medicare and have nothing bad to say about it.

Philly Fed index drops to 1.3 in April from 2.0 Stories You Might Like
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - Business among manufacturers in the Philadelphia region softened slightly in April, the Philadelphia Federal Reserve said Thursday. The bank's business-conditions index edged down to 1.3 from 2.0 in March, though any reading above zero indicates that manufacturers are still expanding. Economists polled by MarketWatch expected the index to rise to 4.0. The Fed reported that the index for new orders fell to negative 1.0 in April from 0.5 in March. Yet the index for hiring plans increased to 2.7 from 0.9 in March.

UPON FURTHER REVIEW

Researchers Finally Replicated Reinhart-Rogoff, and There Are Serious Problems.

It seems a ONE character coding error in the spreadsheet calculations of the Reinhart-Rogoff study resulted in all economic growth from 5 countries (Canada, Austria, Australia, Denmark and Belgium) to be dropped from calculations, which in turn lowered the average economic growth rate of high-debt countries from a respectable 2.2% a year to a horrible 0.1% a year.

LINK here, contains screenprint of spreadsheet error.

Why is this important? Because Paul Ryan used the 0.1% horrible growth rate to justify his "Screw The Poor" austerity program throughout 2012.

The Boston Marathon bombings have somewhat obscured the fact that this story has legs...

There's been a rather steady drumbeat of outrage within the Beltway, quite a number of Very Important People are upset at how badly they were snookered by this "research", which is becoming more apparent with each day that the "researchers" gamed the data to support their pre-existing bias (known locally here as Ishmaelization).

Paul Krugman is the latest to rip these "researchers" brand new assholes

OOPS: ObamaCare May Put Some Unions Out Of Business. “It would be ironic indeed if many of the private sector unions who supported Obamacare (with the promise that these problems would later be fixed) had actually signed their own death warrant. But it seems this may be what has happened. There’s no money in the budget for the government to extend subsidies to the union plans, or exempt them from the various coverage expansions and taxes. And there’s no money in the union coffers to compete with the government subsidies that have already been enacted.”:D
