Liberal? Conservative? Moderate? Left? Right? Republican? Democrat? Independent? Green? Libertarian?
The liberals tell me that conservatives are backward thinking fanatics out to destroy our individual rights and sanitize our 'immoral' thoughts.
Conservatives tell me that liberals are tree-hugging fanatics out to destroy our economy and sanitize our speech with their political correctness.
Every group seems to talk a great deal about the (wrong) political values the other side has and then wages war accordingly. I would like to know how people on this board define their political beliefs in both a theoretical framework (I believe in freedom for the arts) and their practical application (I think artists should be able to produce works in all mediums even if their community finds the work deeply offensive or without redeeming value).
Personally I think I'm a pragmatic anarchist, I consider the government a necessary evil that exists to serve the community (through schools, roadways, welfare programs, etc.) and protect individuals from the 'community' (religions, the government, corporations, mobs of rednecks, etc.) and hostile entities (other countries, criminals, terrorists, etc.).
I also consider myself a humanist, making me a feminist as well; I believe that all human beings are inherently equal and that no thought/philosophy/belief system is more 'correct' than another. I believe that everyone should be morally compelled to do what's right for them but should also be willing to face the consequences of their action.
Lacking an appropriate title, I call myself a 'leftist' or a 'liberal' or a 'Democrat' even though I am aware my beliefs do not necessarily coincide with those of other leftists/liberals/Democrats. For the same reason you rarely catch me saying "You're a conservative so you must believe X and Y but not Z."
So, what are you politically or socially or whatever? And what does that mean to you?
