What does it mean to be a slut?

I was teaching an Anne Sexton poem, "You All Know the Story of the Other Woman," in one of my Lit classes and the concept of sluts was brought up and it made me laugh at some of the answers in this class filled with 18 and 19 year olds.

So my question is this: how should the term "slut" be defined?

One of my students said that anyone who has been with more than 5 people is a slut. I couldn't help but laugh at him. I asked if that meant that most people on the planet were sluts. He looked confused.

Before I give my own thoughts on a definition, I'd love to hear what you guys think.

Well, do you mean 5 at a time? 5 in a row? or 5 total?

To me a slut is someone who uses sex to gain power or assert influence, rather than using sex as an act of love, or a simple release. A woman can have sex with lots of men solely for the sake of getting off. That wouldn't make her a slut. Now, if she were to seduce her boss, whom she has no sexual interest in, and sleep with him for the single purpose of getting promoted, she would be a slut.

I think you and I see things differently. Very interesting. I don't really see the term "slut" as a negitive or a bad thing at all. It seems that you do. (maybe I misread)

I think in many situations, "slut" is a very possitive term. But what is a slut? Is a slut something negitive and I just look at it wrong? Or is a slut a positive thing?

Is there a possible definition?

Until recently, this term had a strongly gendered aspect. Generally speaking, women are socialized to repress their sexuality. Just think of all the stereotypes, even today, that depict women as wanting sex less than men -- desperate husbands begging their frigid wives for blowjobs, girls insisting on "talks about the relationship" when guys just want to get off, blah blah blah. These stereotypes have comparatively little to do with how real humans actually live, but they do reflect the social reality that women get judged negatively for wanting too much sex.

The connotations of "slut" are changing, but I'd say that in the real world, this change is happening far more slowly that one might think based on a perusal of Lit. ;)

A Four-letter Word

A slut is

A slut is a woman or man who is not afraid of to let loose scream out what they want, tease in public. I have been fotunate to have known many wonderful ladys who enjoyed being sluts. I don't want a woman who is afraid to let go i want a slut who wants to have it all.

although most of the time it just means someone who is getting more sex than I am. (Not my opinion...I'm a slut and proud) and then doesn't have the grace to look guilty. or in the sexist view Any woman who seem to like sex . i'm hopeful that the term is becoming more positive.

im not really going to get into the definition on a slut but will say one thing for your student that thought sleeping with 5 people made you a slut. Thats probably because he is about the age of a hs senior and in most hs if a girl has had 5 different partners by then she would be considered a slut by most. Now someone just 4 years older would consider 5 different partners perfectly normal

I tend to agree. To me, a slut is a person who truly enjoys sex and sexual discussions and is oblivious or completely uncaring about what others may think. A slut is someone who knows what they want sexually, and they are sexually vibrant, and they think it is perfectly natural.

I do think that the concept of nembers generally goes hand in hand with the term too though. I don't think 5 or 10 necessarily implies "slut" though. Instead, I would be willing to bet that the general number, if a survey were done, would probably be about 20 or so. I have met a lot of guys or girls that make comments like they will get married before they get to 20 partners because anything more might lead to a slutty reputation. I don't agree with this, but I think it fits a general stereotype.

In all reality, a person must have more than one sexual partner to be a slut, at least in my mind. The reason being is that the term implies experimentation, and having only one sexual partner means limited experimentation.

However, I see the term as being very positive and a reflection of a unique or independent or self aware individual who want to understand happines and live life to its personal limit. But that's just me.

I'm a great slut and I like it. A slut is simply a woman who loves to get fucked. A slut loves to fuck and play and talk and fuck some more. I don't care if someone thinks I'm in the wrong because I'm not. I don't fuck because society tells me to. I fuck because I like it and I want to.

I used to be so wild and I've tamed myself some, but there are times when I just need a man inside of me. That makes me a slut and that's okay withme.

But then again I have never had a problem with so called "sluts". Different people just have different sexual appitites.

Defining a slut.

I no longer think of the word "slut" as gender specific.

Fidelity is what distinguishes non-sluts from sluts. If someone is in an exclusive relationship by mutual agreement and understanding, a slut is a person who violates that arrangement.

There are different kinds of sluts. There are money sluts- people who will say and do anything for money. There are "BBD" (Bigger and Better Deal) sluts- people who will drop you like a bad habit for someone else with more ____. There are ethical sluts- persons who behave selfishly without regard to the effect their behavior has on others.

In this context, I honestly believe there are more male sluts than female sluts. I refer to a great many blowhard salespeople as "promiscuous whore liars," that would include people like Hugh McColl, Ed Crutchfield, anybody who works for Goldman, Sachs and most of Wall Street.

Q: How can you tell when people like these are lying?
A: When their lips move.

maybe thats why people think I'm a bad thing...

as for the topic
I think a slut is a person that just way to much {insert generic thing here}
not just sex

though most of the time whore sounds 'better' in that context but meh

I use it a lot when bugging friends, I called one of my buddy's a Final Fantasy slut one day
and I'm a slut for a nice cold can of Guiness
and I would be for a few of the girls here ;)

Being a slut means...someone else is jealous of you.

What my mom always use to tell me. :D

For an article that attempts to defy standards of what a proper woman should be like, it sure does pigeonhole men into a certain role.

I think she's actually flouting societal conventions regarding both gender roles. The word slut takes on a certain negative power when we assume certain things to be true about both sexes. Like, girls are slutty if they sleep with lots of boys, and boys will never take slutty girls home to meet the parents.

I meant more like its portrayal of the ideal man as extremely masculine: "big hands and deep voices" and being able to pin somebody against a car door.

define Slut

To me the term "slut" means a few things.
1) someone that will fuck anyone whom approaches them.
2) someone that will fuck anyone whom approaches them wherever.
3) someone that will fuck who they want, even if they have a S/O (both ways)
To sum it up, a nymphomaniac with NO control/self-restraint.

I do realize this can be portrayed as an "open" relationship for someone with a STRONG sexual appetite, but there are times when it should be controlled.

But this is just MY opinion
