What does "dark" mean?

The world was dark, though, even if the story wasn't.

Last night the Plot Bunny visited me and left one of its cuckoo young with me. A mage tracks down an enemy mage as part of their ongoing feud. But actually it's a trap, and Mage 1 is caught. Dark? Not yet.
Mage 2 does nasty things to Mage 1. No wait - Mage 2 uses a spell to make Mage 1's fears come to life. Alright, it's getting a bit darker. How about if it's fears *and* desires? That at least might make for a darkly erotic story.
By this time I was thinking it might work as a City of Scum story. But the basic premise of that setting is that there are no nice characters. So to show Mage 1 as being nasty as well, they have to turn the tables on Mage 2 and subject them to their own fears and desires.
But to make it properly dark, and fitting for the City of Scum, Mage 1 leaves one way out of the spell: escaping through the window. The story ends with Mage 1 walking away as Mage 2 plummets to their death.
I have a whole weekend before me with not much to do, so I might see about writing it.
