What do you think?

bill-pix-trade had a very good point...it's sad that we live in a day and age that is filled with so many people looking for an easy way out.

It makes it harder for those who really do need help.

If I were desperate...I'd never go door to door looking for a handout...

Geez, McDonalds will hire anything...

I don't buy it. I see it every freakin day and it makes me sick.

It's good to want to help, but there are some people out there who would turn that good deed into a life altering event.

Have the cop friend there if he shows up...they can smell a scam.

Damn, i didnt even think of that!
My husband thinks i should have him sand the window sills that need to be painted........
Biz is biz. I see this every day. What state do you live in? I would get his SS number and an address, some references, and call them. Check his drivers license, or other ID. I would also get him to sign a simple "hold harmless agreement". I would not let anyone work for money on my property with out a insurance certificate. The world of lawyers make it impossible to do anything nice for any one. If he gets hurt you will be shown in court as some one who was willing to hire some one to do stuff cheap, so in turn you benefited from his cheap labor. You will be showed to be taking advantage of his situation, and providing an unsafe work environment.

Be careful. He could slip and fall, and file suit. You are hiring him and you do not carried workman's comp. Your home owners may not cover it. I would be very careful. The world is full of scam artiest.

That being said, if he is for real, then find some stuff for him to do.

ya... *nods head* for THAT reason alone I'd not let him come back

ok, call me crazy, but have you ever considered telling the cop about this, then not being home around the time he is supposed to come and letting the cop deal with it........

I hate to say it, but that's your best bet.

Alert the cop just in case - did he see the inside of your house? does he know about the dog? You never know if he could be just looking for an easy house to break into later...

I know it sounds harsh, and if the guy truly is in need, it's a shame, but you can't be as open and accessible as people were years ago.

getting there...

you work hard for everything in your life...why should you hand over your money to someone who may earn more money a year than you do by targeting soft touches.

aren't we all just one payment late of being homeless?

I had a guy come up to my car window as I was backing out of a parking lot. All he needed was $5.00 to get back home. I said that I didn't have any money on me. HE suggested I go to an ATM! I suggested that he was crazy.

Now how do you put yourself somewhere and not be able to get home?

How does $5.00 get you there?

Just this past week, someone on the street needed $5.00 because he was stranded in the city since the Live-Aid concert. Wasn't that like almost a month ago? Hell, if he had started walking...he'd been home by now.

Funny how $5.00 is the going rate to get anywhere...

I am sad to agree with this statement. If you feel obligated you could give him something because you asked him to come back, but I would ask him to leave your property as soon as possible. I would not let him in the house, and I would not open the door with out the dog. I would politely ask him to leave, and give him $20.00 for his trouble of coming over. Tell him he has to leave, and you can not hire anyone to do any work. Do this quickly and imfaticly. He he hangs around ask him to leave again. If he does not leave the next time you tell him call the cops.
