I ask because of the missing teenage girl case still open here in Oregon. I was reading in the news today that one resident of the apartment complex where they lived won't submit to a lie detector test because he is afraid it will be manipulated.

Would you or would you not take one and why?

I beat one as an example once. They can be manipulated and unreliable. If the person knows how to meditate they can be easily beat like I did.

No I would not - they are notoriously unreliable giving both false positives and false negatives. There is a reason they are not admissable in court. There have been a number of studies that show a direct correlation between the interviewers interpretation of a positive (i.e., the person is lying) and the suggestion to the interviewer that the person they are interviewing is guilty or even just suspected - this when no person they were interviewing was actually guilty. So, the results can be so easily manipulated simply by the bias of the person conducting the test.
