When you think someone who been an asshole on the board is probably genuinely mentally ill? Repeatedly hurts very nice people, and kills good threads in their tracks?

Do you bash him or her like a troll? Maybe it feels good, but aren't you really feeding their problems by doing so?

Do you treat the poster with compassion and kindness?

Or do you try somehow to ignore this person altogether?

I would like to know....how do you people deal with this?...In another enviroment he would be tossed out on his ear.....

Quietly overlooking a boor can help him to anesthetize his validity.

If you know the person has a problem then don't flame or troll them. Allow for their condition and move on....

The ignoring is good advice, and my own preference. But what if the poster is genuinely hurting a good, caring person, who is unable to ignore his or her posts?

then PM the person and see what kind of dialogue you receive, if you get flamed in the email then stay away.

Try talking to them privately - possibly their actions are just a desperate cry for attention. It might not be a mental health issue so much as just extreme boredom and need to be noticed. Hard to ignore if they pop in on every thread demanding attention though.

Ignore them. If a genuinely good and kind person can't also ignore them, then they probably need to find a gooder and kinder board. ;)

Seriously though. The knight in shining armor thing's all well and good, but anyone who posts on Lit better be able to handle a few harsh words now and again. That's all they are. Just words.

Then the person who is feeling the pain should stand up for themselves, and express what is undesirable or distasteful.

LOL sure, I got a few dragons you could slay. You want the list in order of annoyance-factor or chronologically? *grin*

Ok, since I posted I've been thinking. This is actually a pretty big topic for me. It drives me nuts when my friends don't/won't back me. But that's it. They back me. If I'm not willing to take the first one to the jaw and punch back on my own, then I don't deserve my friends to support me.

Additionally, I won't support anyone who can't be bothered to support me. Not anymore. Done with that. Nuh-uh, never!

That's a more detailed explanation of how I feel. That being said, you still gotta be able to fight for yourself.

Did that make more sense?

You made good sense the first time, and I appreciate your additional thoughts. We are all adults and capable of taking of ourselves. Yes, my "hypothetical" friend has been taking care of herself for a long time, and shouldn't need help from anybody.

Maybe it's a guy hormone thing. I haven't punched anyone since I was a child. But if a guy had done in person to a gentle woman friend like what might have been happening on the boards... I would be having to work hard on self-control.

The other issue that I wanted people's opinions on was -- does it make a difference whether the basis for an asshole's actions are chemically based? And yes, you can't tell for sure over the net by any means...

Nah. I think assholes are assholes. If they're functional enough to operate a computer, they should be functional enough to act like a human.

So use humor, possibly ignor them, e-mail them (hoping you don't get flamed), kick 'em in the balls (personal favorite) allow for thier weakness,
Don't you ever want to just scream.....

GET THE FUCK OUT YOU MISERABLE PISSANT?

I have a lot of respect for all of you. You have learned to use your mind above all else. For one who uses his hands for a living it is a high aspiration.
I have a lot to learn.

Ha! well I broke my own personal rule of not fanning the flames and got into it with LordLuncan.

"whatever"

Trail, your PM box is full

To use a phrase from an old Ronnie Milsap tune: "...while my hands make a living, my minds on <insert> 'better things'(originally it is "loving you").

Don't knock working with your hands, Trail48. It's a less expensive form of therapy.
