True Grit (2010)

The original, starring Best Actor John Wayne, was on TCM just recently and is still worthy of that Best Actor award -- in many ways it is better acted than what I've seen of comparable "modern" movies.

I think amateur autthors all over the world should bury Hollywood in proposals for NEW movies so we don't have to suffer through endless remakes of successful movies and old TV shows. :(

What do they really care, WH? They make the movie and people watch, bitching about it when they leave the theater or not.

It simply makes them money, and that's all they're after to begin with.

Maybe I can get them to make movies out of some of my stories. :)

I am sick of the remaking, particularly the remakes of remakes. While it's true that most stories share basic characteristics (good vs. evil, attaining the unattainable, loving the unlovable), that doesn't mean that we want to hear/watch/read the same exact thing over and over.

I don't mind so much the "good" remakes, like I Am Legend and whatnot... But those movies are ones where the original was underscored or underacted, or the effects make a big difference...

The only exception are the Little Giants/Replacements/Necessary Roughness series of movies. I didn't mind the remake factor at all.

I'm not going to bitch about as I leave the theater -- I ain't goin' t' the theater 't all.

Seems to me they could make just as much money by sending a "remastered director's cut" to the theaters -- it wouldn't cost them nearly as much and even if not as many people bought tickets, they'd still make money.

WH

The movie guys are trying to sell wares to idiot bankers who recall JOHN WAYNE and JIMMY STEWART and ANN BANCROFT and JOANN WOODWARD, and are clueless about anything since then. The bankers want sure-things.

Some dimbulb with clout and money.

Bullshit walks, in Hollywood-- hand in hand with cash, much of the time.

Here Here.
As long as they don't try it with "The Shootist".

There was a rumour a while ago that someone wanted to make the "Dam Busters", one of the most "British" films ever made. The thought that Hollywood wanted to get in on the Act made most of us shiver with fear. Well it ain't happened yet, thank the Lord.

Or Rooster Cogburn.

Rooster wasn't a great movie, and without Hepburn and Wayne and without their history and chemistry, it wouldn't even be a good B movie western. Remaking it would be a disaster.

If the money were mine, I would digitalize the original True Grit and erase Glenn Campbell from every frame. He would be replaced by either Ben Johnson or Rip Torn.

oh man, you are so right.

Wow.

I have to say, Jeff Bridges is exactly the right age to play Rooster.

Hollywood's already been remaking every French and Asian (especially Asian Horror) movie that seems halfway decent. Don't be surprised if they de-Brit any given movie.

Often times, it's easier to recycle...

...and Swedish, and...

I get it the recycling-shooting for a sure thing, but I'm with ya, WH.

Anybody seen "The Wild and Wonderful White's of West VA"...a mesmerizing documentary.

I may have to look that up; if nothing else, it'll give me new material to make fun of a few buddies.

:D

And every old TV show that ran for more than half a season.

Yogi Bear and The Green Hornet are hitting the theaters this holiday season, too.

The Green Hornet does look like a good revival of a classic Black and White TV series. The Trailer I saw a few minutes ago was definitely NOT B/W. :p It looks like it's going to be one of those campy super-hero movies done in bright primary colors.

I'm not sure what to think about Yogi. Yogi and BooBoo have never been been a serious contender for most artistic film or episode , but I don't think they're big enough stars to warrant the expense of 3D CGI for a feature length film. Rocky and Bullwinkle weren't, despite legions of passionate cult followers.

Fun fact: Johnny Knoxville produced!

That family is, as they say, a piece of work.

Johnny Knoxville? From Jackass?

I think if I were West Virginia, I'd admit I ate roadkill raw and blame Knoxville on Alabama.

Well, look at it this way; they made Speed Racer and the movement continues... It's got more momentum than Denzel's new train.

On the other hand, a few of them (not necessarily the newer class) haven't been so bad. "Lost in Space" was actually a decent movie. Then there was "Dudley DooRight" (sp?). I think the entire movie wasn't worth a ten second clip of Will Ferrell in "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back."

It's hit and miss. Mostly miss.

The one and the same. The movie is getting high marks.

I dunno, WH, I' m pretty sure Green Hornet was an early color tv show...I have memories of seeing it on our cool new color tv way back when.

Did they make two movies from Lost In Space? You can't possibly be talking about the Lost In Space Movie I saw -- as much as I could stand watching, that is.

The one with Matt LeBlanc and William Hurt (Probably the same one you saw).

Similar to "Starship Troopers," I didn't think it was bad at all (once you stop expecting, that is).

IMDb says you're correct, but the cover of the DVD sure looks colorized. I remember watching Bonanza, Disney, and Batman in color but Green Hornet sitcks in Memory as B/W. Perhaps my local station just hadn't upgraded to Color transmitters?

That's the one. I wasn't expecting much, but the sets and special effects were much better than the acting -- as is far too often the case for sci-fi and fantasy films today.

I will mark this day on my calender to be celebrated yearly if not more often....I finally had the answer to the right question. ;)
