What Could You Live Without?

Live without...

Smart phones...I can live without them. They are a bane upon society.

Television sets(why are they called that when it's only one?)...everything is now available on the internet, so why have a TV?

Anything labeled New and Improved...that's just a lie. A product is either New or it's been Improved. If it's improved then it's not new. You can only improve something that already exists, therefore it's not new.

Everything else is useful.

The saying, "I could care less."

What should be said is, "I couldn't care less."

----

The saying, "Near miss."
People say this when two objects pass close to each other but don't touch.
What should be said is, "Near hit." Meaning the objects nearly hit each other, but missed contact with each other.

A near miss would mean the objects touched ever so slightly. But they did touch. :rose:

It would seem that the American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language disagrees with you on that score...or would that be a near miss?

near miss n.
1. A narrowly avoided collision involving two or more aircraft, ships, boats, or motor vehicles.
2. A missile strike that is extremely close to but not directly on target.
3. Something that fails by a very narrow margin: Her campaign for the Senate was a near miss.

The expression "Needless to say"

If that is said, people should then stop speaking, because well....

Just as Japanese businessmen know that when an American tells them something then says..."However" that anything they were told prior to however should be ignored.

I will follow up on my previous post.

I can live without anymore of the 24/7 news coverage and debating of the Zimmerman verdict.

Mostly I would like to live without the horrific fact that the media is obviously disappointed that there has been no real violence and rioting over this. That the protests are staying fairly peaceful

This case was appalling on many levels and now that it is over it needs to really be over.

I would like to live without background music in restaurants, stores and on TV dramas.

My hearing loss makes it difficult for me to follow conversations in a noisy environment. I can put my hearing aids in, but they amplify background noise as well as the people speaking to me.

Background music makes it nearly impossible for me to hear and understand a waiter, a store salesperson, or the people I am with.

And the background music is usually mindless rubbish.

In the same vein, the laugh tracks on British sitcoms can go too. (Make that "laugh track." I think they've all used the same laugh track for half a century.)

Back in the 1960s, I used to get free tickets to be a member of the audience at pre-recorded, and sometimes live, BBC TV shows. Perhaps some of that 'laugh track' is me.

Before the recording or live transmission started, there was a warm-up man or very rarely a warm-up woman who got the audience in the mood. Often that warm-up was better than the show itself. Some of those artists went on to become household names. Sometimes they were household names from the past who were making a few pounds while technically 'retired' or 'resting'.
