What? Like I recognized all of your local celebs???

Something on another thread gave me the idea for this silly diversion. What celebrities have you encountered?

Sissy Spacek - On a street in Alexandria, VA. Talked with her and got her autograph, which was inane, like "I know a lot of people with your name" or something. I guess it's hard to be fresh when you sign a lot of autographs.

William Hurt - In a bar in New York, spoke with him for a minute or so.

Richard Hatem - Producer and screenwriter (The Lost Room, Mothman Prophecies) - does that count? I was in LA visiting relatives in a year ago and through them went to a party at his house. Nice guy. Introduced me to Lee Childs's books.

I was on a ferry from the isthmus to Avalon and there was some soap opera star on it. My then girlfriend was thrilled, I couldn't have cared less.

If I've had other celebrity brushes, I can't think of them now. So how about it - how has fame touched you? If we keep score, LA residents must have 2.5 brushes to everyone else's one brush. :)
I am with Imp ... brushed up to a lot of Canadian politicians (YEE HAA!) though not THAT intimately close!) Lived in LA for a spell and visited NYC a lot at one point, and Toronto wasn't a bad mecca for sightings or meetings, either. Indeed met some I liked and some I was not especially fond of ... saw enough. However I am also not fond of name dropping, as it does remind me of WHY I hated L.A. (as much as I loved it.). ;)

I WOULD like to meet Catherine Deneuve, Roman Polanski, Nathalie Portman, J. Deppe, Jody Foster, Annie Sprinkle, Nina Hartley, J. Stagliano, Dave Navarro and Courtney Love, not to mention Madonna ... if only to talk for an hour because their personas are so interesting to me ... sigh. I would also enjoy meeting Gweneth Paltrow if only to ask "WHY THE HELL DID YOU NAME YOUR KID APPLE?" Of course, one might want to talk to Frank Zappa about his baby name choices also. :D

Cheers.

If you brush up against them on purpose, more than once, it's stalking.

That's what the pornstar bodyguards said at the music festaval, but that didn't stop me from trying :D

Glad you stopped by. :) The Willie Weed is probably for a degrees of separation thread - that could be many pages long.

If you want to go by seperation, I had a best friend who dated a girl who had a sister that worked as a production assistant on a TV show (the name of which slipped my mind halfway between the beginning of this post and and the end of it).

My mother knows one of the original Dukes of Hazzard. He's a customer at her store.

Is there such thread?
Yes, many pages.
Encyclopedias.

Oh, but I didn't inhale the Willie Weed. Honest.

Maybe a related thread idea: What celebrity do you think you'd really enjoy just hanging out with?

Again, I think it would be a blast to pass a fatty back and forth with Willie.

Also, I get the impression that Keith Richards would be a really interesting visit, have a few drinks with - if you could understand what he was saying.

Pardon for veering away from the thread topic.

Couple more:
Don Reno (bluegrass legend)
Chris Douridas (music consultant on Austin Powers).

Whenever I watch a Dallas Mavericks game and the camera pans on Mark Cuban I get the strangest feeling that we've met - before he got rich and famous.

Oh the near brushes.

Had a conversation with Jamie Gillis and Anette Dehaven, both porn stars from the 70's. Recognized him, but not her (she had clothes on).

Danced next to Joan Baez once in a night club.

Many more, but those are the coolest.

What does it say about me to think the three coolest here are Tonto (by Cloud warrior yet--the irony), Churchill and Terry Garr.

1) You're old (I'm pretty sure most of us are).
2) Terry Garr is just fine, and there's nothing wrong with fine :D

Long ago (1989) when I spent a couple years as a street musician, somebody came along, listened a couple minutes, dropped a card in my case then disappeared into the night. I picked up the card that was boldly emblazoned with the Warner Bros. logo. Then a name, Seymour Stein.
I tried calling the company several times but never got past the first 'gatekeeper'. I was told he hadn't even been in the city I was in. I wondered - and wonder to this day - if it was a mere prank (a cruel one, really cruel) or if I missed out big time.

Of course that was long ago...

Cheers! Great post ... Keith Richards ... even if (edited to add "I") misunderstood him ... would be JUST GREAT to hang with for an hour - as for the others? Dunno them, yet that is your dream or reincarnation and not mine. ;) PS - You are not veering so much as evolving the thread, hmmnmm. :D

Not right now. This one isn't tapped out yet. But Charley's right, threads meander all the time. :)

Well, since we're meandering...

Long ago I had an idea (like most, never pursued) for a book, "All the Times I Almost Got Laid" or "All the women I Almost Fucked". The title and idea is quite malleable.

I still like the idea.

Maybe a collaborative effort?

The reader could be left with the chore of figuring out whether it is fiction or otherwise. :)

Among those who enjoy and study bluegrass music, the name Don Reno sits with those who pioneered the sounds and styles. Outside of those circles he is practically unknown. It would be the equivalent of a young person who wanted to learn blues guitar getting to sit at B.B. King's kitchen table.

Chris Douridas worked at a public radio station in the city I lived in (long ago). He came at least once or twice to the rare gig I could get in a real club. Confessed his impression at the way some of my songs became embedded in his mind (many contained unhidden sexual themes). Shortly after, he moves to L.A. A few years later the Austin Powers movie comes out, and a lot of the songs carry overt sexual themes. I then learn that the music consultant for the movie is none other than Chris Douridas. Certainly there's no link. But part of me must wonder. You know, seeds planted, ideas developed.

Now this is devolving?

Hi Charley! ;)

I saw a wrestling guy when I was a teenager at Taco Bell. I don't know if Bill Dundee ever got further than Memphis wrestling or not.

Was rejected for an autograph by Martin Truex Jr. (NASCAR driver). Apparently he was running behind in getting to his car and didn't have time to stop.

That's it for me, though I know someone who passed by Sylvester Stallone once and whose mother saw Tom Cruise in a Memphis grocery store when he was filming The Firm.

Now there might actually be a thread on that subject! :)

Thank you Crimson, I couldn't think of the name until I saw your post. Sat at a table next to Jerry Lawler in a Memphis restaurant. He was not a big guy, not like today's wrasslers.

Bill Clinton while he was governor of Arkansas.

No joke, I almost killed him. I was stationed at an Air Force base in Arkansas that was scheduled to be closed in the early 90's. When a base closes, it's turned over to the state after the military moves out. Clinton was there on a sight seeing tour as Governor to basically see what his state would be getting.

I was up inside the landing gear of a B-52 doing some work. People that work on B-52's know that you don't simply walk under the gear without seeing if someone is up there. Apparently no one told the Governor this, so he stepped into the LG well just as I was jumping down. I had to catch something and pull myself back or I would have landed right on top of him.

As this was happening, I didn't know who the idiot was that came strolling under the gear well, and I was pretty pissed. I had landed awkwardly in trying to avoid the person, and I came up saying something like "you dumba....................." Shit.... it's the governor.

My anger quickly dissipated, and his shock of almost having someone land on him quickly dissipated too. We wound up having a conversation for about 15-20 minutes. Very charming man to talk to.

Had the Swedish Crown Princess with body guards behind me on the plane down to Nice, France. I did speak to her before leaving the plane.

My mom is friends with one of Sweden's ex-foreign ministers.

I went to school with Sting's son who is now fronting the Police's tour. My friend had the worst crush on him. He played at our Spring Fest, so I have a pic somewhere. Some of my friends are still in touch with him I think.

I went to school with one of the Trussardi daughters. We had a few classes together and she was a sweetheart.

I've bumped into various obscure Swedish celebs at airports.

Got authographs of some football players when I was younger. Had one football player call me up for an interview when I was 15 and doing a school essay on him.

Did an interview with one of Swedish pianist Robert Wells.

Eh, do photographer celebs count?? If they do, then I hang out in same forums as them and PM with some. LMAO

You are so kind to talk on my behalf.

You're right, Jomar, I thought of another one:

I stood in line for about two hours to meet Magic Johnson - I was a HUGE Lakers fan at the time.

He was beyond nice...talked to me for a moment, we laughed about how I barely cleared his waistline, and then he palmed my head (his hands are that big).

:D

and one more, although this won't mean diddly-squat to those who don't follow NASCAR:

Harry Hyde, the legendary builder of NASCAR is a cousin, so when I was going to races, I always had pit passes. I have pictures with AJ Foyt and Cale Yarborough, both Pettys, Dale Earnhardt, and others (why are most NASCAR drivers short???), and once made the front page of the Atlanta Constitution sports section as a friend and I were sitting in the pits drinking beer.

Last edited:
Sean Connery, walking in Edinburgh with his wife. I said hello and he said Hi. :)

Billy Connelly, we got off a train in Edinburgh Waverly station, i held the door open for him. Got a thanks from him. That was when I realised why he was called The Big Yin.

J K Rowling, I bump into her every now and then. ;)

Chris Bonnington, well he's a local, went to the same school.

Bill Gates, he was in Edinburgh a few weeks back - secretly

Richard Branson, years ago in Rose Street- one of his first shops. I bought Tubular Bells from him. :D

He palmed your head? That's funny! NASCAR could be a lot of fun. I knew you'd come up with more. :D
