I understand the frustration. I understand why someone would want to use strong words to convey passion. I sure as hell do.

I also realize peoples migrate. When you go back and look at the prehistory of our continent as we currently have it pieced together you see one culture give way as, say when people came from the untamed north in responce to drought...

What makes our culture unique is that we are not bound by a skin color, an ethnicity, or a 10,000 year tribal history, but by a common language, a set of laws, and a tolerance for others religeous beliefs that is, in some respects, rather new to this world.

To say that these views are racist in misguided at best. What I see is expressed repeatedly and in somewhat rhetorical ways, is the principle that you are welcome to come and adopt our ways and your benefit will be the chance to prosper, and to see your family be free and happy.

I don't understand how support for regulation of immigration necessarily equals bigotry. I'm sure xenophobia and racism inform the ideas of many people who wish to limit immigration, but there are plenty of other reasons to support it, the first and most obvious being the need to keep radical would-be terrorists out of the country.

Second, as strongly as I believe the nation is strengthened by an influx of highly motivated people who seek to move here and contribute to the great economic engine of happiness, there's an obvious pragmatic limit to the rate of this influx before there will be significant economic displacement of people who already live here. I can't see how anyone would begrudge Americans for wanting to limit the number of immigrants coming in when their jobs and livelihoods are at stake. And regardless of your feelings about immigration it should be obvious that when a significant Americans who are represented in government feel threatened from outsiders, there will be a move to limit immigration.

When a nation has as many economic opportunities and political freedoms as the US enjoys it's only natural that people are going to want to come in droves. If I was from a poor third world nation, I'd want to come here too. Still, from a pragmatic realpolitik perspective, there has to be a limit. Maybe it seems hard-hearted but as Texan stated, Emma Lazarus' vision of America is extremely romanticized and offers only a part of America's mission (another part of which is to protect the interests of citizens already here). The interests of Americans and immigrants will always clash and as long as America is a place where more people want to come than want to leave, there will always be regulation.

I am a child of immigrants who came here legally. they did everything they were required to do to come to canada. It upsets them when they see people jumping the line while others taker foreever.

I worked for a while with the Immigration and refugeee board in Canda and I know the difference between refugees and illegal immigrants.
