Watched movies this weekend:
A first, and guaranteed only viewing of A House of Dynamite on Netflix.
DO NOT WATCH! I don't know what they were thinking, but this movie was already grinding into boredom in what should have been an exciting scenario: mysterious ICBM launched and headed for Chicago.
They wasted time restarting the story from every POV possible, which got old fast, and had NO POINT whatsoever. Simple editing to include all participants would have been the smart filmmakers method, but formerly trusted director Kathryn Bigelow throws that out, with belabored repetitive nonsense that kills the suspense.
The final insult is that there is NO ENDING. Bigelow winds you up for two hours and the credits roll, with NO CONCLUSION AT ALL.
So... this is... what? Nuclear war would be bad? Haven't filmmakers covered that since the 60s? AVOID THIS TIME-WASTER!
Next, a second viewing of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. A decent entry into a tired genre. It at least had some heart at its core. Popcorn fun.
Next was a second viewing of Colors, starring Robert Duvall and Sean Pean, a well-done (directed by Dennis Hopper), seemingly realistic depiction of LAPD 'gang units' fighting crime in the 80s. Great performances and action.
Next was Suicide Squad (not to be confused with The Suicide Squad), a delightful, glee-filled exercise in bloody mayhem. Starring Will Smith and the delightful Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, this is pure, psychotic mayhem, and it works beautifully.
Next was a second viewing of Jason Statham's Crank. Fortunately, the filmmakers knew what they were dealing with and set the tone early, and steered the course. It's crazy, impossible and fun all the way through.
Now I'm halfway through Crank 2: High Voltage, an almost immediate follow-up to Crank. It's even more preposterous, but with the tone that's been faithfully followed, it's fun as hell.
