Reconsidering my obsessive attempts to beat back the entropy of the world--I could spend a day cutting back a massive privet bush, but there's a delightful ecosystem inside of and around it that I don't want to disturb. Plus, it would be a serious pain in the ass.

I have the same dilemma for all the reasons you listed. Not privet but a shrub(s) just the same.

Is your shrub thirty feet high and maybe fifty across? Are we talking about the same scale of problem?
