I think it’s that, but I also think some people just settle in. Like they’ve met their partner and now they don’t have to make any effort anymore.

I think this is definitely part of it. Someone finds their person and then takes on the attitude of "Well, that's that, I'm done!" I've had relationships where the first couple months were all out sex and good times and then one day she just puts on pajamas and spends the rest of the relationship farting. Having a comfort level is one thing, checking out is another.

You can also end up with someone that turns out to be a terrible partner. That was my first marriage. She had a mean streak and was just awful. There are plenty of examples of this (including her calling me homophobic slurs) but I keep thinking of her telling me "I don't care if you're happy" and driving me to tears. And also she'd wonder why we had no sex life. Yeah, I wonder. My dick doesn't respond to cruelty.

I 100% understand why people cheat. When communication breaks down you have no place to go.
