Being French, I know gateau means cake to us. I've never heard anyone English use that word. So to you is gateau is a specific kind of cake?

Its a frozen cake, that you have to defrost to eat. I don’t know much about them other than that, as it was my first gateau! I don’t even get cake for my birthday, as it’s not something I’m really into.

The main difference between cake and gateau is that cake is a sweet food made with a mixture of flour, eggs, sugar, and butter or oil whereas gateau is a light sponge cake with a rich icing or filling.

That’s how google defines the difference!
