I literally cannot function if I think too hard about this. I have to consciously assume the people who worked on the car next to me, the airplane above me, etc., etc., were competent and well-meaning people

Yup! When I became a volunteer firefighter and got to know everyone I took out extra house fire insurance

I randomly ran into an old friend from far away who haven’t seen in nearly thirty years. It took a couple of double takes and jogging of memory to recall her name.

She happens to be friends with the only woman I ever dated who could have become pregnant while we were together without me knowing about it. She mentioned that our common friend had been a young single mom but didn’t offer a specific age or further details.

Well I leave you with this, the dumbest/weakest of us still had full 1001 training. Especially with a small crew everyone had very specific tasks they were assigned to and quite competent. Even in the smallest towns the firefighters dedicate a lot of time to practice. You're good. In all honesty I got the extra insurance because I found out that sometimes in rural areas insurance doesn't cover the cost of firefighters.

Unless she thought it wasn't her place to be the one to tell you.
However in my case. If I was that friend and knew such a big secret, and also knew that you deserved to know that kind of thing. I would heavily hint that you should find a way to visit her or pop in as some kind of surprise or something.
